Is there a reason why my computer suddenly tells me i have no antivirus.
Everything is up to date, but the other day it told me that i do not have any antivirus installed.
So i restarted the computer and i still got the same message, so i got a friend to come over and have a look, turned the computer on and guess what, everything was normal again and working fine.
Has anyone else had something like this, and what causes it.
Has it got anything to do with not having enough “system ram” in your machine, i am running XP and Vista, and have no problems on the vista machine, this happened on the XP computer which has only 512mb of system ram.
But anyway what caused this security message to pop-up telling me there was no AV installed… 8)
It might have to do, at least in part, with your system’s low amount of memory. With today’s applications (and if your system can accept more) I would advise you to upgrade to at least 1 GB.
Whenever this Windows Security Centre message appears, it pays to initially treat it as genuine, until proven otherwise.
So first you check that the AV actually is working, by (1) checking the status indicator of the blue ball and mousing over it to make sure the providers are running.(2) If you are a little paranoid, go to Eicar and try to download one of their test files. The web shield should stop it. Disable the web shield, download it to your desktop, and right click it. The standard shield should pop an alert. All is good. You can let it be deleted.
The windows security centre sometimes gets itself a little bewildered. Sometimes a restart will fix it. Sometimes it needs re-setting. Here is a tutorial. Basically, once you have deleted or renamed the Wbem/repository folder, Windows will rebuild it on restart. Hopefully correctly. Note that it may take more than one restart.
Once you are satisfied all is working well again, you can delete the renamed folder.
I’ve had to do this only twice in about 7 years, but it’s not uncommon.
Yes it does probably need more system ram, its pritty cheap enough, the machine is about 10 years old, but i will buy a complete new one in the next couple of months with 4gb… thanks for replying though
Fantastic Tarq57, and very well explained, its still running fine when i turn the machine on, so if i have anymore of these security notifications i will have to try the above solution to fix this.
Thankyou again for your help… 8)
