Hi folks!
I have noticed, that there is no prompt to restart the PC, when updating avast 5 automatically. In the program there is the hint to restart, but it is not displayed outside the program. I have checked the option ask for reboot.
am I the only one who noticed that thing?
Hi,
Reboots are generally not required (and won’t help) for VPS (Virus Definition) updates.
The only time that a reboot should be normally required would be for a program update, of which there have only been two since the release of Avast5.
By default, Avast asks for a reboot when a program update occurs. The checkbox you are referring to is specific to whether avast asks to reboot after a program update.
Yeah, I noticed that also.
I think it’s like this: to work properly, you don’t necessarily need to reboot to the new program version, since the old one is still working and using the current VPS. With your normal next reboot, the new version is going to be effective automatically.
Normally, a PC is rebooted at least once a day, since most people turn their computers off at night, so there is no real need to force you to a reboot and thus stopp your current work. Protection is maintained by the “old” version until your next regular reboot.

of course I mean the reboot prompt if the program is updated, not the vps…
in the v4 at any program update the prompt reboot is required was displayed, so I wonder why not in v5…
Thats rather strange ... Im pretty sure I was asked to reboot as soon as the automatic installation finished. I seem to remember reading that it could be done later but that an immediate reboot was advised.
In fact, it was only after the second reboot (done later after failing to get manual update to respond), that Avast 5 was fully operational on my machine.
After initial installation, you must reboot.
Following automatic updates of the program: see my above post.
It should ask…
Tech, what are you trying to show with your picture?
The plot is this:
Avast installed and running
Automatic program updates enabled
Update is downloaded and installed automatically by Avast
No Slide-Up to request a reboot is shown (above the systray)
GUI however shows “Reboot needed to complete program update”
→ I believe that is completely ok, as the old program version is still running and keeping up the protection. So there is no immediate need for an instant reboot, as a slide up would imply.
Any later, normal off/on (Shutdown/reboot) will complete the update anyhow.
data noticed there were no prompt to restart. I’ll telling how to get it.
Yes, it’s ok. I do not reboot immediately also.
hi Tech,
thanks but I know the settings and they are like yours. But v5 doesn’t prompt.
Have you considered reading my post?
Hi ![]()
I’ve just had a look at my settings… I’ve Not Changed Any Default Settings! 8)
My Avast 5
Virus Definition Updates = Automatic Update
Program Updates = Ask When An Update Is Available
And Also…
Ask For Reboot When Needed = Ticked!
However!
When I first installed Avast 5 ( Clean Install ) it did Not ask for a Restart ???
- Installed Avast 5
- Avast 5 Automatically Updated Straight Away
- I tried to open Avast 5 via the Desktop Icon … But It Didn’t Open!
Not sure if I had clicked properly - or - What :-\ … I didn’t want to try again
So! - Waited a while … Just to be sure it wasn’t going to open.
Then… - Restarted My Laptop!
- Gave it time to settle after the Restart
- Successfully Opened Avast 5 - & - Was asked to Register

I think many software company’s are going down the route of… Not wanting to tell people they must Restart their computer.
Instead!
They just presume at some point the computer will be Shutdown or Restarted - & - The update/Install will take affect then :![]()
But I Don’t Like That! >:(
If something needs a Restart … I’d rather it just asked me.
Less chance of things going wrong ![]()

It’s ok. It does not need it if you haven’t uninstalled a previous version (in that session).
It should work… but in your case, something was glitch… who knows…

You’re welcome Hally.
Yes I have read your post, but you think (!) that the settings are like this which seems to be possible, but I just want to inform the developers / mods about this behaviour.
