I tried to perform a boot time scan but when I restart the system windows starts without performing a scan.
My os is win xp sp3, and installed Avast Pro a few weeks ago after I had some doubts about the state of my computer.
I used to use Windows Security Essentials before, but after I noticed that an account name “Piress” was created, I switched to Avast a/v product.
I performed a full system scan before and avast detected 2 viruses.
I then started a boot time scan and avast detected again 2 new viruses.
Afterwards I performed some more full system scans but no more viruses were reported.
This afternoon when googling the boot time scan issue my screen went blue with a little black box in it, and I had to restart my computer.
I have performed a full system scan in safe modus, but it reported no viruses, but I still cannot perform a boot scan.
Maybe I’m just paranoid, but I want to make 100% sure my system is clean, because I need it for my work.
I hope you guys can help me with this.
Many thanks.
Regards.
Patrick
hey and welcome to the forum. if you think your still infected pleases follow this guide and attach your logs.

Are you using the latest version of avast?
Hello
Thanks for your reply.
I already downloaded MalwareBytes, and it’s now running next to Avast.
I’m using Avast version 7.0.1455.
In Windows safe mode I performed a full scan with MalwareBytes, and it reported 2 issues → see logfile attached.
I ignored these 2 issues.
I then used the command line to schedule boot time scan with Avast, and when I restarted the boot time scan was started.
This scan didn’t report any issues.
Until now my system is working fine, but I’m now working offline most of the times.
Thanks for advising me for the next steps.

all functions of malwarebytes does not work in safe mode and should only be run in Safe Mode if normal does not work
what it found was two security modifications … PUM = Possible Unwanted Modification
Security senter disabled … did you do that or is it malware that did that ? … if the last one then let MBAM fix it
I will perform a MalwareBytes scan again in normal mode, and let MAWB correct the reported issues.
I will report the log to you.

and you only have to do a quick scan as it covers all areas activly running malware use
The quick scan finished without reporting any issues.
I have attached the logfile.
Do you think my system is clean ?
Do you have any explanation for the “Piress” account which appeared on my system?
Thanks

Do you think my system is clean ?see the link mikaelrask posted above
attach AdwCleaner / OTL / aswMBR logs
a removal specialist will then check for malware later today …
Attached the OTL and aswMBR logs.
The AdwCleaner didn’t run succesfully : error variable used without being declared (see jpg attached).
you could try to empty IE temp files first and the run again …see if that changes anything
no, same result
Have you first downloaded AdwCleaner before running or did you run it directly in the IE?

No apparent malware, is it just the Avast bootscan that is not working ?
Hello,
@essexboy : I finally managed to start boot scan using the command prompt command sched /A:* in windows safe mode.
@djbone : I downloaded it to my desktop, and started it from there.
Thanks
