No Email Protection - error 10049

I recently installed avast 4.7 on my Windows XP system, along with Comodo firewall. Everything appeared to work OK at first, but a couple times there were error messages which my wife has seen, but I was not home to view - till now. The PC has been on, but not used for a couple hours. I just sat down & my screen had 4 similar messages.

Avast! will not be able to protect news (NNTP protocol) error 10049
Avast! will not be able to protect incoming mail (IMAP protocol) error 10049
Avast! will not be able to protect outgoing mail (SMTP protocol) error 10049
Avast! will not be able to protect incoming mail (POP3 protocol) error 10049

I did a forum search for this error number, but there were no results. All my settings are set to scan all the above. Any suggestions what is happening?

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

this and the others below might help

Check into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable)

Don’t need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)

I am not a Comodo user (there are quite a few contributors in this forum who are) but I would suggest it would be worth trying to remove the permissions for ashMaiSv.exe in the firewall and allow them to be requested again.

If that does not help I will defer to my fellow contributors who know more of Comodo.

By the way I am fairly certain the error number is 10049 - if you want to search for more information in the forum

hope tech’s and my post’s helps
tech after your pm-the below is for you

I previously had ZoneAlarm 5.x. I upgraded to 6.x and had random connection problems so I uninstalled & went back to 5.x. But I still had intermittent times where I could not connect. I uninstalled , reinstalled, went back & forth. Did clean uninstall, went through the registry as some suggested. Tried everything I could find. If I turned off ZA the problem went away. So I got rid of ZA. And my Norton AV happen to expire at about the same time. So I installed avast AV and Comodo firewall. Everything worked OK for a couple weeks, then I got the error messages.

How come I do not need rights to connect to:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)

How is avast antivirus going to work if I do not allow the connection? How is it going to update? What am I missing here?

Thanks for the links. I don’t why my search for the error number did not work before, but it comes up now with messages. Makes me think I typed in a wrong number.

There may be remnants of Norton and this often presents itself like this avast detects the remnants and disables what may be conflicting elements.

A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT

Because they don’t connect to the internet the other three are the only avast processes that require internet access.
