No Firewall Found in Avast 5

I recently purchased Avast IS 5.0.418 and new to Avast on a friends recomendation. In the sales promo it states it has firewall…where is it.? I have presently been using Zone alarm, which has typical firewall settings menus, pop ups, etc…clearly a firewall program. Where Does one find anything to do with firewall in Avast user interface.? Does avast call it “Real Time Shields” ? It still does not appear to be a firewall as I am accustomed to. Very poor help info from Avast in this basic area. Why dont they just call it “FIREWALL” in the user interface? If one even exists?
I must be missing something real obvious…or possibly did my download get corrupted? Thanks in advance for your thoughts or critique.

Hi,

weird…could you post a screen shot of the interface, main avast panel, and also a screen shot of avast services (in computer management)?

Did you buy avast Pro (antivirus) or avast Internet Suite (AIS) (antivirus and firewall).
Firewall is clearly shown in the left side of AIS interface.

Thanks ! Here is a screen shot of the Avast user interface. Thanks also for the link to the quick start page showing the FireWall tab. Definately missing from my interface.

yeah something went wrong with your install, the firewall wasn’t installed at all. To make sure, as said check if avast firewall service is installed or not (right click “computer” >>> management >>> services). This would help to know if something just went wrong with the UI or if the firewall wasn’t installed at all. A custom install with “firewall” un-ticked would actually lead to the same result, but you can’t have done that without being aware of it so I suppose the install went wrong somehow.

Thanks Again. I attached a snap shot of “computer services” and it appears not to be installed. I may have inadvertantly unchecked it on install…but really don’t recall (ADHD…RFB) Would you recommend simply re-installing over existing Avast…or un-install first? Would it apply to the new Beta version as well if I decide to do it instead? Thinking of giving that a shot instead. One last question if I may, is it advisable or necessary to un-install Zone Alarm firewall prior to Avast, or would disabling it be sufficient until comfortable with Avast?

Just go to the Windows Control Panel, Software and elect avast!. You can add the firewall there. It’s simple.

The firewall is not installed.
Which was your old firewall?
Is there any setup error message?

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.
