No Free Activation Option

So I’ve been following this link to renew my (free) activation/account: https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/Activate-Free-Antivirus/

However, after clicking to upgrade now there is no option to select free antivirus; the button at the bottom simply isn’t there, only one for upgrading on the right. Avast expires in ten days, so how do I select free antivirus?

I may be wrong (I dont use avast) but i think you go to uninstall avast and there you get a option to downgrade to free …. or did you already have the free version?

I mean, I’m already on free, it’s just I want to continue the free subscription and I don’t see an option to let me. It’s strange that the button is missing to allow me to select it; I can’t remember it happening before.

Hi,

Please see if this helps.
In Avast Free, go to Menu> My Subscriptions> Next to “Avast Free AntiVirus” click on “UPGRADE NOW” > Under “Select your security level” window click on “SELECT” Avast Free Antivirus > Under “Thank you for choosing Avast Free Antivirus” window, click on “No, thanks”
If it does not help, please attach a screenshot of what you see.

Hi there, that’s what I did do, but I don’t get the option to renew the subscription. Please see the attached image (sorry, was a phone picture).

Please attach your screenshot(s), some of us don’t follow external links.

See attached.

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Is there really nothing to do other than re-install Avast? Seems like the nuclear option to me.

Feel free to wait for other/better suggestions…

Why don’t you just wait those 10 days?

I think I read that you have to wait until expiration to get the “select free” option.(if someone can confirm?)
In the meantime, to make “expires in 10 days” disappear and renew for 1 year now, you probably have to uninstall it like said by Asyn.
You can also try a simple uninstallation, restart your computer, delete (if present) the file “license.avastlic”, it is normally located in “C: \ ProgramData \ AVAST Software \ Subscriptions”.
And re-install avast free.
Maybe also try to delete this file without uninstalling avast , but I think you have to disable the autodefense for that.

Hopefully that’s the case! We’ll see…

You should have been able to update your free version right from the renewal notice. Note the link you posted is/was for very old versions of Avast on Operating systems (no longer supported) that had old versions of Avast installed.

I have been able to do that ever year (12 days first notification) with my installation of avast free. I got a screen not dissimilar to your screenshot, but there is what looks like a greyed out button below Avast Free. I selected that, but it doesn’t exit graciously, invaribly I had to (X my way out) closed the window using the X top right of the window.

I think that the difference for me is that I didn’t press upgrade (which takes you down a totally different path).

What happens if you Right click the avast tray icon and go to the Registration Information - Don’t click the Upgrade Now button, are there any other options ?

I don’t see any on my installation is my registration has more than 12 days to go.

For me Avast really need to get a bloody grip on these free renewals, as they at one point said free is free and doesn’t need to be re-registered, yet here we are years latter doing the some bloody daft renewal function and getting tied up in knots.

There aren’t any other options for renewing; just something for Avast One above it.

  1. Wait for your next renewal reminder possibly a few days and take a screenshot and attach it (removing any personal information, if any).

  2. In theory you can continue to ignore it ans it will eventually renew on its own.

I’m expecting mine sometime this month I think so we will have to see. Unfortunately Avast saw fit to remove the how long is left on your registration, supposedly because it is free and you don’t need to renew (My 4rse).
