No GPS available for Anti-Theft beta?

have a new samsung galaxy S3, thru Verizon. Downloaded and installed the betas for Mobile Security and Anti-Theft. In setting up, under AT Advance Settings, after clicking on the box for “Automatically enable GPS”, I get this msg: “Google unfortunately removed the interfaces to use this feature in Android 2.3, please install Avast anti-theft rooted if you want to auto enable GPS on newer android”.

Does this mean that if my phone is stolen, I have no way to track its location? As to the root part, I did a little research, and I am very leary of this, because it seems it would void my warranty with Verizon. Not to mention that it appears complicated, and I am not an expert.

I also went to the Avast website, after logging in, I found my phone in “My Device”, gave it a “locate” command, and it said see GPS coordinates, which showed lat of -1.0.0, long of -1.0.0.

If I can’t get the gps theft locator to work, I will delete the anti-theft, and keep the Mobile Security for virus and malware protection. I will then try to find another vendor for the anti-theft part.

the message only means that GPS can not be enabled automatically if disabled in system settings from Android 2.3 on.

What about the poster’s original question – if you download rooted version will that void phone warranty and is it complicated? I only know the basic terminology about rooting and don’t plan on doing any, but the auto-enabling of GPS seems pretty key and mine is usually off on my system to save battery.

we can not advise you legally here. usually rooting however is not a big thing and can be reverted as well (just my own personal opinion though).
