Glad you got your problem fixed…

To be sure, check if the scanning (on-access as well as mail) is working with the eicar test file.

We have this problem too. We have Windows98.
We had excellent results immediately after downloading yesterday. The resident protection caught 3 viruses in email in the first hour.
Today, after booting, Avast did not load. When started with the desktop icon, resident protection was disabled. After enabling to “standard”, no blue balls appeared near the clock.
We ran ashDisp.exe and nothing seemed to change.
thanks for any help.

Try a repair of Avast.

Thank you for your reply.
Could you please direct me to instructions for “a repair of Avast”?

Window, add remove programs > avast anti virus > Change Remove button. From the window scroll down and select Repair.

This may not work with win98 as the Change/Remove may only allow for Remove only. If that is the case you will have to uninstall avast/reboot/install avast/boot and check if that has cleared the problem.

It works the same on all systems - no matter what the (Windows) button says. So, the “Repair” function is always there - it’s a part of avast!.
