No internet access after update 10.0.2208

Just ran update via Avast interface
On reboot, Broadband connection reports No Internet Access
Reset (BT Hub3/ BT Infinity 1) wireless router
Still the same
Checked connection via Mobile Computer/Phone - OK
System Restore to pre-update state - back to normal
Windows 7 - Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
Avast 2014.9.0.20121
on HP ENVY 17 Notebook PC

I have exactly the same issue. If I restart the Avast services I can access the internet for maybe half an hour and then the same thing happens again. it’s becoming very frustrating >:(

Even did it while typing this out!

The most common cause of not being able to access the internet after a program update is something blocking the changed avastSvc.exe process. Though I don’t know if that would present that particular message “Broadband connection reports No Internet Access.”

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

What browser are you using and have you tried a different browser ?

I have BT Infinity with the Hub2 (which shouldn’t be that different) and that works fine on both my systems, desktop XP on direct network connection to the Hub2 and my win7 netbook using wifi connection to Hub2.

I’m not quite sure issue is exactly the same, I’m somewhat surprised that you have internet connection for some time and then it drops out. Really it should either work or not, intermittent issues are not the norm.

What browser are you using and have you tried a different browser ?
You could also check your firewall settings as above.
This however, is clutching at straws a bit as the intermittent state shouldn’t really happen.

You could try disabling the avast online security plug-in/add-on in your browser and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve tried using Firefox, IE and Chrome all with the same result. The Firewall is Avast’s own as I’m using the fully paid up Avast Internet Security Suite.

I have attached a screen shot from when using Chrome. I have already tried deleting the entries for all of the browsers from Avast Firewall and allowed it to repopulate to no effect. 30 mins browsing (approx) and hey presto it’s blocked again.

Interestingly enough if I restart the Firewall it makes no difference, however if I restart the AV service then it starts working again which is really strange although I believe when the AV service is restarted the firewall service is being restarted as well.

I have not checked to see if Avast has an entry or not but if it has I’ll try removing avastSvc.exe from the Firewall rules tomorrow and see if that makes any difference when it repopulates.

By the way I’m also using BT Hub3/ BT Infinity

As soon as I updated to the new avast 2015 it started doing the internet problems and tried a whole bunch of suggestions to no avail. Then called support up and they just told me its the error reporting and I need to pay 119 to fix it just today or almost 200 to get like a year or something… They said nothing about anything in these forums so it was NO HELP AT ALL except a way to get to pay for their service… So then I just decided to do a system restore from before I did the update and what do you know everything is fine… So not sure I’m gonna update it unless it becomes required for the system to work… I have an online home business and canNOT be offline for extended periods of time.
So I hope Avast sees this and comes up with a fix :frowning:

I have the same problem after updating to 10.0.2208. I’m using IE and Firefox. After rebooting my desktop PC, everything works for about twenty minutes, then I have no internet access. It seems to be a problem with resolving DNS names. My wife’s laptop is running the free version of Avast, and she’s had no problems at all. She and I both have the same gateway and DNS server addresses. When I do NSLOOKUP from a command prompt, during the 20-minute working period, names resolve okay. But during the not-working period, it can’t resolve names.

Edit: If I turn off the web shield, then NSLOOKUP works and web pages work. Then I noticed that my wife was still running version 2014.9.0.2021 with no problems, so I did a system restore back to version 2014.9.0.2021, and now everything is working okay.

I had similar problem after upgrade. I uninstalled Avast! and reinstalled from fresh download, and now all is fine. I interpreted this as a corrupted upgrade.

Thanks for your response DavidR
When I say that I have no internet connection, I mean that the icon in my system tray / notification area gives a pop-up indicating that the machine has a wireless link to the hub, but says ‘No Internet Access’.

I’m using the paid version of Avast Internet Security at version 2014.9.0.2021

I have whatever Internet Explorer version is current - I don’t use it but do update it
I use Pale Moon which is at version 25.1.0
I also have Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Lynx versions installed for webpage testing
However, I didn’t get as far as even opening a browser - eMail via Outlook failed; no connection is no connection

After I ran SysRestore and returned to v2014 it was all back to fully functional
Because I need the connection on this machine to access and update my website, (amongst other things), I’m loathe to reinstall v2015 to play with the problem right now until I’ve seen a few more posts - looks like there’s a few issues with the release.

PS That’s to say, I’m using the Avast Firewall

Interestingly enough each time Avast blocks the internet connection when I try to select the Account option I get a message my device has being disconnected from the Avast account log on and I need to log in again with a button that only allows me to log Out - see attached screen shot. When I click the button and log back in yet another laptop has been associated with my account (I have 6 at the moment and have deleted some 14 more in the last 2 days).

Come on Avast it’s about time you addressed this issue as I can no longer recommend this as a product to anyone the way this is being dealt with by you >:( >:( >:(

Ah, well, starting to look like this thread isn’t attracting further expert responses/suggestions.
There are several others that, whilst not identical, seem to point to some sort of glitch with the new release, but I haven’t seen a common …thread(!) that links them so far. (BTHub? Win7? Windows Update??..).
I DO know that I don’t have the time to fanny about experimenting with my ‘live’ setup right now, so I’m not going to try the upgrade again until something more positive appears.
Just have to hope that that doesn’t leave me too vulnerable…

Don’t loose heart gf.comms2, there is always an answer somewhere. I seem to have had some unexpected success.

While going through the Avast firewall rules I discovered an entry for “ClientConnect Ltd”. This is part of the Conduit family of Malware so I deleted the rules. I also deleted all rules relating to my browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, IE etc. I then opened Programs and Features and uninstalled the two programs relating to “ClientConnect” and “ClientConnect Ltd”.

I then ran a Boot Time Scan and when it discovered Conduit and any other related infestations I selected option 1 to automatically deal with the infection.

Once the Boot Time Scan had completed I then ran a Disk Check on all disks. After this had completed I defragmented the disks.

OK I only completed this 4 hours ago but have not had the issue since and so far there have been no Internet Connection failures.

It just strikes me that if this is the cause of the issue - and I have no reason at the moment to doubt this is the case - then Avast is not doing a very good job if it is allowing these types of program to have Firewall rules configured to allow them access to the internet. It’s possible the Avast Firewall was simply blocking internet access because the system had been compromised - however if this is the case it would be good to receive some kind of notification from Avast with an indication on the possible cause and solution.

I should point out that Conduit and ClientConnect may not be the only programs that can cause an issue like this and the Boot Time Scan may come up with other infections but hopefully if your issue is the same or similar it may help point you in the right direction.

Good luck.

Oh by the way I also uninstalled iTunes at the same time for a number of reasons. Not so likely but it is possible this may have something to do with it as well. Just thought it’s worth mentioning just in case.

I’m going to leave the system running overnight and will provide an update tomorrow.

Thanks John278
I’ll certainly not give up - it’s just that I’ve worked with PCs for decades and I know how much time is likely to get eaten by, for instance, doing what you have.
Right now, I NEED to be working on my website rather than fault-finding - particularly whilst the previous version is functional.
I might run a boot scan - always worth doing periodically - but it doesn’t ‘feel’ like an infection, more like a setting or compatibility issue.
Going by the number of posts reporting issues with the upgrade, I suspect that it either has some new feature that needs adjusting or it alters some pre-existing setting.
I hope that your experiments bring a conclusion for you.

Hi gf.comms2,

Unfortunately while the problem seemed to be resolved this only lasted 3 days and then Avast commenced blocking my connection again.

I’m beginning to think this is an issue with the “Enable Network Lock” feature automatically kicking in for some reason. I have not managed to figure out a way of disabling this yet so have now had to create a scheduled task to run every 15 mins to restart the Avast antivirus which is a real pain but I cannot afford to keep loosing connectivity.

Unfortunately it does not look like Avast is too bothered about resolving this issue so like you I’m going to have to regress to an earlier version >:(
