After being prompted I have just updated my Avast Internet Security from version 140216-1 release date 16/02/2014 to version 141028-1 installed on 28/10/2014 (order no. 23500059) on my windows computer via Firefox. When I mouse over Avast icon in system tray there is no menu just a pop-up balloon saying ‘Avast is turned off, click here to fix’ which only results in replication of the balloon, neither can I open the Avast interface. I am unable to delete or uninstall program using Windows control panel. I am very disappointed to have paid for an update with such serious problems and to find other Avast users with similar problems. I have tried Total Support helpline three times without success. Please can you advise a way forward…

The numbers you are mentioning are vps version, not avast versions.
Use the uninstall tool to remove avast and install the latest version (2015.10.0.2208)
