no login for XP Pro after avast scan - help!

Can’t login after avast virus removal, no admin pass available to go through console,
logs in and out - loginit.exe probably gone - how do I get in replace -
make drive a slave maybe? Is there anyway to reverse restore without admin?

Thanks!

Hmmm… seems you’ve deleted (or sent to Chest) necessary files to boot. This is not good (neither for avast reputation, nor to your computer). Maybe overinstallation can solve the problem and you won’t lose your programs, settings, data, files, etc.
Just choose ‘Repair’ installation of Windows and install ‘over’ the old installation.

Thanks Tech, yes its comforting to know after a scan you can’t log back in- worthless remedy… I thought better of avast before this. In hindsite, best to let it scan then replace the os elements. Checking out some alternatives, they all have warts.

Cracked admin password. Copied in deleted files. Removed Avast.

Are you sure about this? Can you show some logs so we know where the problem was?
Maybe a HjT scan just to make sure that everything is okay.

Yes I’m sure, if the av takes out the login, you’re guaranteed a shut out. In a more organized setting you’d copy /clone then, scan - take a look at the stuff it wants to kill then copy in the clean system elements. Deleting or putting crippled files into a chest alone will set up a user for hours of suffering and yeah, those 5 links to Mr. Softee’s “knowledge” base. Finally, did a repair install and file check to all ensure system files in place. Big thank you to Malware Bytes for finding the rest of the crud. No logs available.

I always complain about this…
Files moved to Chest at boot time can’t be restored at boot time :stuck_out_tongue:
Also, why avast make copies of some system files if it’s not allowed to replace them back? You can’t do within Windows (files in use), not at boot time… Go figure programmers…

I agree, it’s a show stopper, when programmers look at the big picture, you get a better solution, it would be great to recommend avast as a best solution, has a lot of good features…

Usual for malware to take out login. Still can’t see how you say that avast did it.

There are fixes when malware takes out login.
