hi,

what are the possible reasons Avast will not scan when it is asked to? could this be a virus or malware blocking the anti-virus or might there be a less sinister reason?

Which scan are you talking about the on-demand scan, e.g. does the memory scan, but doesn’t open the Simple User Interface ?
Or using the right click context scan using ashQuick.exe ?

Commonly the presence of or remnants of another AV.
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

thanks. the previous AV was mcafee but it was taken off by a technician - would it be an idea to go through the programme files and manually delete any references to mcafee?

McAfee has an a number of uninstall tools (depending on version) that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.
