No manual updates?

After dumping McAfee and installing Avast 4.7 Home Edition on my Vista Home Prem 32bit laptop, I immediately right clicked the Avast icon in the system tray and clicked to manually update the iAVS. On my Win98 SE machine, a green and brown icon would appear and show the update progress, but no such icon ever showed up in this case.

I did check my settings and checked to show an icon while an update was in progress, but this facilitated no change when I attempted it again. The program eventually updated itself automatically, but I like the control of manual updates.

Thank you.

Although I don’t know if this might have an impact what McAfee product and version did you have ?

McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.

If the progress window didn’t appear I don’t think it is actually downloading and installing the update. If you like to control updates, as I do, set the Program Settings, Update (Basic), Virus Database section to Ask. That will ensure you at least know there is an update available and you can elect to click the notification box to update then or ignore it and do a manual update of the iAVS later.

I’m not even certain what version of McAfee I had. It came with the laptop. When I uninstalled it, it reported a successful uninstall. I checked the c:\program files and the McAfee folder was gone.

I’ve set the update to Ask. I’ll have to see if that works.

It is not so much the McAfee program folder that is the issue but possible remnants left in the registry which can cause some grief. I think the link I gave is for versions up to 2006, there is a different one for 2007 versions. If however, you haven’t been experiencing any problems you could leave it.

Let us know if the Ask works for you.

Welcome to the forums.

It was as you said. I ran the uninstall tool, which found quite a few leftovers. After the reboot, I did a quick repair install of Avast and this time, it downloaded its update.

I actually had downloaded McAfee’s uninstall tool, but dispensed with it when McAfree reported a successful uninstall. I should have gone with my gut instinct.

Thank you.

Your welcome, thanks for the feedback.
