No more Ewido Anti-Spyware -> now it's AVG Anti-Spyware

Hello folks ;D

Ewido Anti-Spyware is no longer available for download from Ewido’s web site. From now on it’s AVG Anti-Spyware. Although Ewido is no longer available for download the updates will be the same for Ewido and AVG Anti-Spyware.

AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 contains the same ewido technology, but with some further enhanced features:

Features of AVG Anti-Spyware
NEW Highly improved cleaning
NEW Lower resource usage
NEW Additional languages supported
NEW Updated user interface
Shredder for secure file deletion
XP Antispy

so, from now on, if a user is not able to remove a virus or… we will have to suggest to him to use AVG Anti-Spyware :stuck_out_tongue: ::slight_smile:

We could still call it Ewido - a.k.a, avgas (or avg anti-spyware), the same as the download file. Strange how ewido 4.0 has jumped to avg anti-spyware 7.5 ;D

You can download the avg anti-spyware form the ewido site still though.

Hopefully it hasn't picked up an odor along the way.... ;D ;D

Well yes… I don’t see anything wrong in doing that. It’s not like we are working for Alwil so we have to see all others as competition. We have to be objective, always. Computer security is in the first place. I don’t care if my shield wears avast! name or AVG. If it’s good, it’s good… period.

BTW, what AVG guys did is wonderful move forward, nothing else.

Fully compatible with avast! and many other AV programs.

I don’t mind what it is either, I have downloaded the avg anti-spyware 7.5 setup file to see what improvements they talk about. I had hoped to install it in parallel and test together but, no joy it detects the presence of Ewido 4.0 (same guard.exe service, etc.) and prompts you to uninstall it and reboot.

My first scan with it took just over 9 minutes but, I forgot to pause the standard shield for that scan, so not much of an overhead with avast looking over its shoulder.
I have done another scan with standard shield paused and avgas 7.5 seems slightly slower for the same scan settings in ewido 4.0 almost 8 minutes against just over 6 previously with ewido 4.0.

Considering the increase in items it checks for vs the older version, there's bound to be an increase in the time it takes to do a scan. :)

Which is basically what I said to see what the effects of these improvements are. In this case it slows the overall scan duration (note I did say ‘slightly slower’) nothing I’m concerned about, I don’t sit at my computer waiting for it to finish.

David, I’m curious about your scan times. My full scan takes over an hour. The fast scan takes 30 minutes. About the same for both the now deleted Ewido 4.0, and the newly installed AVG 7.5. I normally run it without pausing the standard shield, but the times are virtually the same if I do. What’s your secret?

Edit:

Using 11 gigs on a 60 gig hard drive. Like you, I don’t sit in front of the computer waiting for it to finish, so it’s no big deal. Just curious.

why such a huge version jump?

I uninstalled Ewido 4.0 and installed AVG antispyware 7.5.
When I tried to do a full scan my computer froze. I tried Ctrl, Alt and Delete, but nothing happened so I had to manually shut down and start the computer again. This happened twice with Full Scan. Quick Scan worked fine.
I had turned off Standard Shield in Avast.
I used Roll Back to put my hard drive into the state it was before AVG installation, and now don’t know if I should install it again or go back to Ewido.
Any one else have this problem ???

Hi roro,

Yes, I’ve had it several times with Ewido. It locks up while scanning virtual memory and only a power off will fix it. I don’t think it’s a problem with the new version, which just seems to be re-branding.

why such a huge version jump?

Purely to integrate with AVG: 7.5 is the version number of the new beta which includes anti-spyware scanning.

Frank,
It never happened with Ewido 4.0, which made me wonder. Can I fix this in AVG 7.5 or should I go back to Ewido until the beta is upgraded.

Did you notice if the same thing happened to you? Was the program scanning memory at the time, and did it get stuck while scanning virtual memory, something like this:

VM_xxxxxx?

If so, I don’t think it’s anything to do with the upgrade.

It got stuck right at the beginning and it did have something to do with memory. I will install it again and see if it reoccurs.

I’ve found the problems is intermittent.

haven’t had any problems with my avg anti-spyware,turn off the standard shield and my full scan takes @14 minutes

I reinstalled AVG 7.5 and ran a full scan with no problems this time. The Full Scan took over an hour and found 2 more tracking cookies. I had already run the quick scan. that took 30 minutes.
I do have 50 gigs of hard drive used.
Since Ewido never had a problem, maybe the reinstall has solved it.

Mac,

The reason for such a high Version jump is because the name AVG goes with there ANTI-VIRUS program. The version for that is 7.0. Being that Ewido was so… well designed and thought out AVG decided to up that Anti-Spyware program Version to 7.5

Anyone like the new minor change to the hightlighted tabs on the buttons? It’s Blue and NOT Orange. Blue goes along better with the inderface 8)
