No network access after update to 6.0.1209

I upgraded to 6.0.1289 (free version) yesterday on my WinXP system. Today I cannot access the internet.

Help, please!

As a side note, I inadvertently clicked the “Try Avast Internet Security free for 15 days” button. I have reinstalled the Free version but still no joy.

I am using 6.0.1203 on my Win7 system and am waiting to resolve this issue before updating the Win7 system.

Do you use any personal firewall?

What firewall were you using when you updated to 6.0.1289 ?

If a 3rd party firewall, not XPs:
Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

I use the WinXP firewall. I do not currently allow an exception for avast! I never had to in the past.

I was able to load the 15 day trial for avast Internet Security.

My son was able to access Steam and play a game but unable to download content via IE8.

So far it looks like the main issue I am having is with IE8. (I have my email on the Win7 system, so I haven’t checked if email works on the WinXP box).

I just checked the local network, and I can play music stored on the Win7 PC on the WinXP PC. So the local network seems ok as well.

I am writing from my Win7 system. If you can suggest any settings or configurations that might be of interest, I can make a list on the other PC and send it from here…

Thanks

The XP firewall has ZERO outbound checking/protection, hence my comment “If a 3rd party firewall, not XPs:”

I don’t know if this issue is related to trying the 15 trial and reversion to the free version as you must be one of the first, if not the first (on the forums) to try it.

It may be worth doing a clean reinstall of avast free:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 6.0.x http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).

    1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Thanks for all the help!

The uninstall (using awsclear.exe) was the final solution.

It does seem that the “unwind” of the free trial didn’t reset everything correctly.

Anyway, thanks again.

No problem, glad I could help.
