Two weeks ago I installed Avast! 5.0.396 but the small pop-up notification of new virus database installations has not appeared in the notification area of my taskbar since that time. I have Avast! set to show notifications except when a full-screen program is being used, and I am not using any full-screen programs. Thanks for any advice you can offer.
Not sure if this will help yours or not, but this is what happened to me. Mine would not update either. Turned out to be in Settings>Updates> then under Update Parameters I had a check mark next to “I only connect to the internet using a dialup modem”…which is true and that’s how I had the old 4.8 version set up (yes, dialup is slow and it sucks ;D all I can get out here though). Anyway, with this checked, I got no auto updates for 3 days. After UNchecking that, auto updates work fine. My brother’s computer is the same way. Now, if you’re on high speed, I don’t know if it’ll be the same (unchecking the “always connected” option right below that), but it’s worth a shot. I don’t have either one of the boxes checked now and that’s the only way mine will auto update.
These are older settings migrated from 4.8.
The dial up setting does just that. It waits for an established dial up connection before attempting to check for updates.
The permanently connected option, not sure really but I would think it helps with any proxy settings you may have.
Default is with both unchecked. Which will allow auto update if selected to do so for definition updates in the setting above. Program updates are set to ask when new update is available by default.
This has been brought up in several other threads. Your best bet is to go back to the default, with both unchecked, regardless of your type of connection. I’m on DSL, and in 4.8 I used the “dialup” setting simply because I generally connect to my ISP only when actually using the internet and disconnect afterwards, essentially following the same habits as back in my dialup days.
For some reason, ticking “dialup only” in v5 apparently disables auto-updates no matter what kind of connection you have. Hopefully this is among the many things that Alwil is still looking for a fix for.
If you use a proxy (other than avast’s own proxy, that is), that might be a whole different situation.
