No providers active

I migrated from another anti virus tool to AVAST. I uninstalled the previous tool.
Within AVAST 4.7 home no resident protection can be activated. The on access scanner shows that no provider is active. I run it on a WIN98SE operating system with Netscape 7.1 browser and e-mail client.
I followed the instructions of the help file to setup the proxy in the browser and the default POP and SMTP entries in the INI file. But nothing changed. Still no providers active. ???
Can anyone give me a hint how to proceed?

What was the previous virus tool? What do you mean by migrating to Avast from that tool? How was the “tool” removed (uninstalled)?

If you right click on the Avast icon what do you have in the “pause provider” selection?

If you left click on the Avast icon what do you show as far as the “status” of the providers? Is the “start” button disabled (grayed out)?

What other applications or firewall do you have running?

My previous antivirus tool was “Antivir personal edition classic”. I uninstalled it by controlpanel/software/uninstall.
The pause provider is grayed in the context menu of the tray icon.
The status of all 6 providers is “no task is currently using this provider”. The slide rule can not be moved.
The START button is black and if I click on it and continue the next dialog box with YES the error message appears: “The requested resident task was not found / The operation could not be completed”
My firewall is ZONE-ALARM" and I allowed AVAST to access the internet.

 Hi Roger :

You need to do MORE than just “uninstall” Antivir to COMPLETELY REMOVE “it”
from your computer; see the info at
www.avira.com/en/support/av7_upgrade_tools.html . Should use THEIR
“Avira AntiVir RegistryCleaner” AND the appropiate “Uninstallation package” .

I downloaded and executed the recommended file
I scanned the registry for residual occurances of “antivir personal” and deleted them.
I re-booted the computer
But the situation is as before.
Any more sugestions?

 Hi :

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

Repair didn’t help.
But after uninstalling and new installation it works.
Providers are now active and can be edited.

Thanks to all contributors
