There should also have been a number of other pop-ups and a change in the avast tray icon as when your registration expired you can’t get virus definition updates.
After a short time frame avast would be alerting about that on startup, in the avastUI (not secured) etc. and the tray with a yellow triangle with ! over the avast icon.
Not to mention the Windows Security/Action Center would also have been popping up that avast is out of date after 7 days.
So I’m at a loss as to why you weren’t seeing those either.
Do you happen to have avast set on Silent Gaming Mode in the avastUI, Settings, Silent/Gaming Mode ?
Thanks for replying.
Honestly, I dont remember if I got popups or not…eek! only what happened today and there is a cross on my orange ball which I havnt noticed before today.
The cross on the orange ball is new (for sure) but as for the popups maybe just maybe you’re right davidR and Pondus and I missed them :
Silent gaming mode is off. BTW whats the UI stand for?
I purchased the Avast Internet Security last year.
Also as an aside, when I clicked on renew took me to a page that would renew for £39.99 (UK pounds) and that was with a loyalty discount, if you buy via the website its $39.99 (dollars), surely thats a mistake?
Seeing as you are here can someone answer this query please?
How do I convert the above to the free home antivirus edition?
The price of renewal should be different, but I don’t know if the fact that your license had expired that may not have been applied. Have you actually purchased yet (if not hold fire for a moment) ?
Visiting the site should normally recognise your geographical location and get the currency applicable to that Country. Looks like that stuffed up.
If you download the free version http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe save it to your hard drive, uninstall the AIS version, reboot, install the Free version, reboot, register it and you will probably find a 40% discount for upgrading from free to AIS.
Well if the WSC is able to determine that the latest VPS is more than 7 days old (which I believe would be a constant) it wouldn’t matter if it was functioning correctly or not.
Well avast still works even when the license has expired it just doesn’t get updates, so the avastUI and tray icon should work in the same way.
I apologize for still posting, since the OP of this topic already solved the main issue. I don’t want to leave DavidR’s comment without an answer.
I disagree with DavidR in this case. If WSC works, great, but that doesn’t mean that the specific Avast setting I mentioned should be buggy. IMO, it is still not acceptable.
For some users, 7 days might be OK (from WSC). The specific setting I mentioned might not apply to this specific topic (renew of registration time ended/passed). But there are certain situations where you want Avast to tell/warn you that there is an update available and you don’t have it (yet). You don’t want to wait 7 days for such info. You don’t want to wait for WSC to warn you. On the contrary, you would want to know it the same day, and under some circumstances even ASAP.
I indeed can think of several situations where that setting not only should work as expected, but it is also critical. I don’t want to keep this discussion (little bit OT) open here, so I won’t explicitly post those situations here (there is/are other topics more related to this). The fact is still valid: the setting does NOT work, and that’s a bug.
