No sounds?

I have Avast 5.0.418 installed and I have the same problem as a gentlemen from Austrilia below. That is no sounds. I am using XP Home SP-3. My wifes laptop is running Windows 7 and sounds and voice prompts works fine. I have checked my settings and have all boxes checked in the sounds tab. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Here’s a screen shot from control panel>sounds and audio devives>harware>audio codecs>properties as suggestted by Igor in another post. Hope this helps someone solve my problem.

What if you start the sound file directly (doubleclick it from Explorer, for example) - do you hear any sound?
They are located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\sounds
(for English, the voiceovers are in subfolder 1033)

Yes, I can play the sounds and hear them directly.

I’m afraid I don’t know what to say… if the sound can be played, the codec is OK… don’t see a reason why avast! couldn’t do that same.
You may try to execute the following 2 commands:
regsvr32.exe l3codeca.acm
regsvr32.exe l3codecx.ax
but I think if these were not correctly registered, the sounds wouldn’t play at all…

Since you can play sounds directly, maybe avast is muted. Check to see if you have sounds enabled:

[]Double-click avast icon on sys tray
[
]click on ‘summary’
[]in upper right corner, click ‘settings’
[
]from the list on the left click ‘sounds’

Make sure you have sounds turned on.

Hope this helps.

Some updates came down from MS. I took them and restarted my computer and presto…sounds. Don’t know if it was the updates or the restart. Anyway all is well.

Thanks for having a look.

After installing The Update to the Avast program today, (Version 6), I had the issue where windows sounds would not work (they only would work with the PC speaker). This is very frustrating because it is an ugly and loud sound instead of my custom windows theme. This is especially sad because the Avast sound scheme is pretty neat in it self.

Well I tried doing a system restore. That did nothing for me. It is also a little sad because it reversed my windows theme enhancements. It also created a glitch for me where the computer wouldn’t boot.

I, then, tried doing a windows update as someone on these forums suggested in safe mode. I couldn’t do it right away because the windows update site said I couldn’t … I needed to reinstall SP 3 (this may not have been an avast-related issue). So I reinstalled SP 3 and did the windows updates that were recommended after that.

After all that, the sounds in windows are restored to normal. The sounds in Avast also work ok now.
