No Tray Icon When Scanning Outbound Email

The tray icon that indicates an email is being scanned doesn’t appear when sending, but it shows when receiving. I did a test and the message I sent had a notice saying it had been scanned, but the tray icon never appeared. I could only find one setting that enables the icon for both inbound and outbound and it’s enabled. I contacted my ISP to see if I might need to redirect, and long story short, I did redirect but that didn’t fix it. Is there a simple explanation that might explain this?

I have Vista Home Basic SP1 and use Windows Mail.

edit to add: The blue avast! icon rotates when sending, so apparently it is scanning.

It may be that it is just very quick, I have run a simple test email and on sending the icon appears, I had to be quick to capture an image of it. XP Pro, OE6.

Hi DavidR, I thought of that and in one of my tests I sent a jpeg that took several minutes to send and it never did show up.

Very weird, I would have expected it to show for both inbound (which you say it does) and for outbound.

I had toyed with the idea that it might be to do with using SSL to send, but the avast icon wouldn’t rotate nor would there be any entries in the email header. So I’m at a bit of a loss as to what else to suggest.

What is your firewall ?

What other security software do you have installed ?
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

DavidR, I’m not sure what the deal is. It doesn’t appear to be working right, but I think it will be more trouble to figure out than it’s worth. I set it to “Show detailed info on performed action” and it shows a banner just above the task bar when sending and receiving. I don’t think that’s even necessary but it gives me reassurance things are working okay.

I hate mysteries too, but personally the “Show detailed info on performed action” would drive me up the wall after a while. Though if only on the Internet Mail provider perhaps it isn’t too bad.

The mail scanning icon doesn’t work with Vista period. I found that out here. That icon I am seeing is actually a Windows Mail icon. There’s no way to disable it, at least not that I can figure out right now.

That’s one reason why I posted an image of what the avast email icon looks like.

Thanks for that, having avoided Vista I haven’t experienced this issue.
