No volume control

After installing Avast Home Edition , the speaker icon was gone from the taskbar. If I used msconfig to access the startup tab and unchecked the two boxes referring to Avast and then rebooted the speaker icon would return, but the Avast icons would be gone. When I installed the Avast icons again then the speaker icon would be gone. ???

I am running 98 SE

Try this:

  1. Make sure you are using avast! 4.5.561
  2. Download this file and extract the content of the archive (2 files) into your avast! installation folder. Because one of the files will be locked when avast! is running, it is necessary to do in DOS or Safe mode.

I think it should help.

Thanks igor for your help. I downloaded the zip file but before I extract the content to the Avast folder I have a question.

I’m not sure what this means when you said “Because one of the files will be locked when avast! is running, it is necessary to do in DOS or Safe mode

Do I need too be in Safe Mode or Dos when I unzip the file and extract to the Avast folder or are you talking about something else.

ashbase.dll (one of those 2 files Igor sent you), will be locked, means that while you are logged in Windows and your avast is active, file will be in use, therefore non-replaceable… first extract those two files from zip archive, somewhere easy to remember, so you can easyly find them from DOS or some DOS file manager. Then, you have to boot in DOS, use your DOS boot disk, and then replace old (original) files in avast! installation directory with new ones Igor gave you…

Hope this helps…
Cheers !

igor and SZ, Thanks to you both for your help. Using the two files solved the problem. My speaker icon is back.

This might help someone else, I was able to copy and paste the two files into the Avast folder without being in Dos. SZ you said something about one of the files being locked if Avast was running. Since I had used the msconfig command to access the startup tab I had unchecked the two references to Avast so when I rebooted the two blue balls on the taskbar were gone and my speaker icon was back. To me this meant that Avast was not running.

So while in windows I copied the two files I had unzipped and pasted them into the Avast folder without any problems. I then went back to msconfig and checked the two boxes I had unchecked earlier. Rebooted the computer and this time I had the speaker icon and the Avast blue ball. At this time everything seemes to be working. Thanks again for your help.
