Non-responsive X64 Win7 installation

Hi all,

Did a fresh installation of X64 Windows 7 today, for the third time. Wasn’t sure why, but every time I installed the latest Avast the system would be unresponsive when trying to load Windows based apps/tools such as items in the Control Panel. Originally, I thought it may have been Windows Update, as I ran it around the same time as installing Avast. There was seemingly no memory spikes / high usage or any high CPU usage. Went into the Avast directory to uninstall it and all of the icons were white pages (as if unrecognized).

Had to boot into Safe Mode to remove Avast, once rebooted everything was fine.

Any reported issues with this? only seems to have occurred recently, noticed there was a major update two days ago too. I’d like to re-install Avast, been using it for a fair few years now, was even considering purchasing the Pro version just to support.

Thanks a lot,

Ant

Did you have a previous AV on this machine in the past? Or a previous security program (firewall, trial version, other security software)? If so, how did you remove it? Vendor’s uninstaller tool or another way?

Would you say that your problems started after the Windows Update or the Avast update. You need to reboot in between each one, so it had to be one or the other.

What version of Avast do you have on your machine now? 7.0.1451 Free version?

Have you tried an Avast Repair (for Win7):

  • Control Panel
  • Programs & Features
  • Uninstall a Program > Select Avast Antivirus
  • Click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair
  • Click Next and follow.
  • Reboot.

As I said, this was a completely fresh installation of Windows 7.

  • Re-installed Windows 7
  • Installed drivers
  • Ran Windows update and installed avast at the same time.
  • Restarted to complete Windows Updates.

At this point the system becomes unresponsive, as mentioned above.

  • Which avast!..?? (Free/Pro/IS)
  • Which version…??

Avast Free (Latest version - found from this URL: http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?part=dl-85737&subj=dl&tag=button)

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.
