hello everybody im new to the forum. first let me explain a little bit about the situation. ok first there are many different people who use my pc (family members). i have tried many colse to all of the av solutions out there and always end up getting virus anyway because the warnings come up but no matter how many times i tell these people they seem to instead of clicking delete or disinfect when a warning comes up they click allow (i think its just to annoy me due to the fact that im the only one who knows much about pcs so i get stuck redoing it when it gets borked). can anyone tell me does this avast program have an option to auto delete when it detects virus(what i mean by that is does it or can it instead of giving you a warning and an option as to what you want to do can it just basically delete it so you dont have a choice?). also when does the on access scanner kick in (some only scan while opening others scan dring open ,close, save, modify) does any one know the situation on that? my pc has win xp home sp2 512 mb ram(447 usable as my onboard video uses 64mb of that). amd sempron 2ghz cpu would avast work good with that (i mean be very light have used norton security 2005 but uses too much cpu for me)? also my pc originally comes with nis 2005 i have heard its a bear to totally get rid of (if not totally gone ive heard performance of other avs will suffer) can anyone give me some step by step instructions to get rid of it the right way please? sorry for so many questions im just sick of trying avs only to find out they dont do what i need. thanks in advance.

p.s. i know its offtopic but could i also get some good firewall recommendations (no zone alarm either as it causes me probs when using emule and some other p2p apps)
Only in Professional version (see picture here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=13315.msg112285#msg112285).
In Home version you can check the option “Don’t show this window again” as soon as the first virus warning appears, and click on “No action” button. This way, nothing will be done and you will be presented the results at the end (and you can perform actions from there).
Or you can use Silent Mode:
Left click the ‘a’ blue icon.
It will start On-access protection
Click on Internet Mail and then on Customize.
Go to Advanced tab and select Silent Mode and the default answer No. This will send the file (email) to Chest.
Do the same for the and Outlook/Exchange plugin.
The answer Yes in Silent Mode keeps the virus in the file or into the message (attach) and continue the scanning. You can’t configure ‘delete the infected file’ in the Home version.
Silent mode in the case of the WebShield provider simply means that avast will keep pressing the “Abort connection” button for hte user automatically.
You can set Silent Mode for Standard Shield provider, but it won’t be a good idea…, better get other kind of protection to your family bad habits.
avast is very configurable, you need to be patient and learn
ok thank you tech. i just basically need something that will allow me to make sure people in my family arent allowing virus onto my pc (they have a bad habit of when a dialog box comes up instead of asking for help just allowing it). i had planned on going with the pro version if it would allow me to set it to auto delete. however in the home version you stated that i got have it hid the warnings now if i was to go that route would the virus still be able to infect my machione or does it basically nuteralize it until its actually open example: say somebody downloaded filename: ****estup.exe and it contained a virus but i had the options set to hide the warning and action set to no as long as it was never opened moved or modified would it still infect the rest of my pc? sorry for the amiture questions im just trying to get feel as to wether or not this would be a good program for me. you also stated i should get other programs for my families bad habits any suggestions(it getting old having to reprogram my pc on a monthly basis). once again thanks for your help.

p.s. nickgolovko thanks for ckecking out my topic.
Yes it allows…
Although I will suggest the following action chain:
Repair > Move to Chest > Delete > Interactive
and not delete at the first time.
No, it won’t. The downloaded file will stay there but clicking the ‘ok’ buttom just continues the scanning and does NOT allow the machine to be infected.
But, remember, if someone (or something) mess your avast installation and run that file, well, then it will infect the computer.
Better to be safe and does not allow the presence of infectable files in your computer. You can do this with the Pro version or you can make regular scannings with the free one and send the files to Chest.
But, you seem to be ;D , hence the new title. congragulations!
Just to clarify the “sent to chest” option rather than delete. If you delete then it’s gone forever. If you send it to the chest, you have the opertuntity to check the file to see if it truely infected, not a false positive. In the chest it can’t do no harm. Once checked out it can either be deleted or restored.
You should NOT be telling your family members who you foolishly allow to use the computer to
" Delete"; should ONLY "Quarantine" or "Move to chest" . As to Norton : to COMPLETELY REMOVE Norton
by : 1) ""Uninstalling" ALL its components from "Add or Remove Programs" ;
2) Run the "Norton Removal Tool", which is available at :
www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html ; 3) Use your computer's "Search > All files and folders", using the search "term" "Symantec" and later "Norton" and
"Delete" ALL it finds ; 4) If possible, use a SAFE & GOOD registry cleaner to remove entries there.
thanks to everyone for there input. after a fresh restore i unistalled norton the “correct” way per Spiritsongs instructions. installed avast and man am i amazed. the drag on my system is almost nonexistant. a can hardly tell its there. so far so good but time will tell. im sure this is the last av ill need to try as ive heard nothing but good things about it. it even caught a few virus that found there way onto cd roms that norton never got. way too go avast!!!
