noobie Question

I just installed avast, having taken AVG off my system. It’s been runing for a day now, and I just downloaded (via newsbin) a *.scr file with a virus. AVG would immediatly warn on saving of the file, but avast is passive until I right click the file and scan it. Then it alerts me to the virus. Am I missing something about it’s real time scanner?

Thanks
Gary

I think, from looking at the avast! website, that the real time script virus scanner is only in the pro version. I don’t have it either. Probably won’t alarm until you try to open it.

Which is your sensitivity level? Did you set Standard Shield to ‘High’?
Did you check for scanning on open/create/modify files?

Tell me more (sorry, I don’t know) about the way you’ve downloaded it: an email attachment, a file from web…
Did you allow all avast providers?

I downloaded it from a newsgroup, NNTP, via newsbin. Right now I was set to normal levels, I have since raised them to high. As for options, I have avast installed with default options, as I am still trying to find where all the options are.

Yes, scan created/modified is checked, I just found it.

To know if a file is a false positive, please submit it to JOTTI and let us know the result.

Please, send it too in a password protected zip to virus@avast.com for analysis. Please, mention in the body of the message why you think it is a false positive and the password used.
