Noobie with a Question

Hi all, I’ve been using Avast for a while now but only just found the forum (Doh) :).
I previously used AVG, but then i found Avast 4.7 and there was not looking back (what a great program) I also use Windows Defender but that never finds anything.
Anyway my question is:- should i also be using Avast Cleaner or is it the same type of program as what i’m using.

TYVM for any help

Hello Chea welcome to the Avast Forum
Avast! Virus Cleaner should be used in the case you know or suspect that your computer is infected.
It is not meant as an antivirus solution for everyday use!
Use Avast! 4 Home or Professional to protect your computer.

Here is some additional information about Avast! Virus Cleaner
Avast! Virus Cleaner

WOW what a quick responce ;D and thank you for the welcome tednelly.
The reason for the question about the cleaner is that, in the past Avast has found (Tro) which i have put in the chest, and then i delete them. but then i read about the cleaner, as was not sure if i should be using that instead to get rid of them.
Thanks for the info link going to check that out.
And thanks again for the welcome and quick responce.

The avast cleaner is also incorporated into the avast 4 home/pro program and if something is detected that can be cleaned by the cleaner it will be called by avast.

The avast cleaner only works with a small number of true viruses or worms, that infect ‘other’ files that list is on the page you were given.

Trojans generally can’t be repaired (either by the VRDB or avast virus cleaner), because the entire content of the file is malware, so it is either move to chest or delete, move to the chest being the best option (first do no harm). When a file is in the chest it can’t do any harm and you can investigate the infected warning.

The VRDB only protects certain files, .exe, dll and other system files, it doesn’t protect data files or all files, it is not a back-up program, so there are going to be many occasions where repair won’t be an option.

Only true virus infection can be repaired, e.g. when a virus infects a file it adds a small part to it, provided that file is one that avast’s VRDB would monitor and you have run the VRDB, then it may be possible to repair the file to its uninfected state.
However, for the most part so called viruses, trojans (adware/spyware/malware, etc.) can’t be repaired because the complete content of the file is malicious.

Welcome to the forums.

Thanks DavidR, more information made clear, this really is a usefull place.
I’m more than a bit illiterate when it comes to viruses and such, but hopefully with the information given, i wont need any more help in that department. But thank you Both for your time and welcomes.

No problem, glad we could help.
