I had norton antivirus installed, of course I unistalled it before installing Avast! home edition and at the beginning of the installation it showed a window saying that norton antivirus was installed and that there might be conflicts. I deleted a directory where I had extracted norton files and also the registry keys under hkey_local_machine-software. I rebooted, run the installation again and still the same message! Of course I ignored it, the program was installed and is working perfectly. But what could have happened? I’m using windows xp SP1.

there are loads of folders & registry-entries norton leaves after deinstallation; don’t know which one avast checks on, though…
what was the exact warning avast gave you ?
Sorry, but your software ISN’T working perfectly but has essential “shields” disabled while that is the case. To reenable these and actually be protected from viruses and such uninstall norton fully trying each of their utilities.
