Not able to update since I upgraded to Internet Security 5

Hi, can anyone help please ? I upgraded from a free version of Avast a month ago to Avast Internet Security 5 and the updates have not been working ever since.

I uninstalled and then reinstalled following instructions from Avast technical support but the same problem occurs

  • automatic update is not happening (last update attempt was 03/06/2010)
  • manual update hangs at Step 1/2 on the screen (progress bar only just starts to turn orange).

I am currently running Avast 5.0.545 and my operating system is Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 Service Pack 3.

It is frustrating that it takes technical support a week to reply to my messages. Having paid for the product, I now seem to be unprotected from new threats. Maybe I will have to demand my money back and go back to the free version, which ran happily.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be grateful.

Thanks
Roger

My update settings that is working for me…

top right corner > settings > updates

ENGINE AND VIRUS DEFINITIONS
(ON) automatic updates

PROGRAM
(ON) automatic updates

UPDATE PARAMETERS
(OFF) i only connect to the internett using a dial up modem
(OFF) my computer is permanently connected to the internet

PROXY SETTINGS
(ON) auto detect (use internet explorer settings)

Thanks for the suggestion, Pondus.

But I have the same parameters set as you and the update does not work

(Under Details on the Settings page I also have all the update options ticked and Auto-Update Interval set to 240 minutes)

Thanks again
Roger

Try ‘direct connection’ (no proxy).
Restart. Retry updating.

asyn,

I changed to direct connection (no proxy), restarted and the updates now work.

Thank you very much for your help in sorting out this problem
