(NOT AVAST ISSUE, SOLVED) Avast! 4.7.1074 appearently slowing down internet

That is it. After I updated Avast from 1043 to 1074 release, my broadband internet connection slowed heavily, it looked like dial-up. Some sites doesn’t show anymore and some others appear ugly and “normalizes” after refresh.

After uninstall (not fully successfull) and system restore I got back to 4.7.1043, wich solved the partially the problem. The internet speed normalized, but the issue on some sites not appearing correctly continues.

I use Win XP SP2 fully updated, A squared free and Windows Firewall. The only program updated or installed by the happenings of the slowdown was the update of Avast.

I think this last update is the cause of slowdown of Avast site in particular (I tested it in a friend PC that does not have avast! and the Awill site is slow and the other are normal. I’m trying to post this topic many times.

Well I am on dial-up and I see no difference in my browsing speed with 4.7.1074. If this were truly an issue with 1074 I’m sure we would be seeing many posts about it and yours is the first. Obviously someone has to be first admittedly.

The fact that you have managed to go back to 1043 but still have problems with that but not speed. This would tend to indicate a problem pre 1074 or a problem with the installation of the update also indicated with a problem uninstalling.

What was the problem with the uninstall ?
I feel using system restore may not have been wise as this could cause some problems in its own right. The avast! Uninstall Utility, would have been the better choice find it here save it to your HDD.

I would recommend you do a clean install of the latest version (which would confirm if it was just an issue with the update installation) rather than use the old version.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Now uninstall, reboot, run the uninstall utility, reboot install the latest version, reboot.

hi.

use “avast! uninstall utility”
http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe
to remove all that was left after avast.

reset “advanced settings” in internet explorer

check that internet connection is working

check that you have not rootkits in your computer
with http://www.gmer.net/
and check that LSP is okey with http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm

use regcorrector to fix some possible errors in the register file (you will need to run it once or twice)
http://www.alonewolfsoft.narod.ru/page23.htm

try to download and install avast again

I am using avast 4.7.1074 and I just conducted a speedtest on my broadband connection:

Download: 21600kbps
Upload: 1828kbps

Slightly better than the last test I performed with release 1043.

I am not able to observe any noticeable effect of the version change.

Hello to all. Thanks DavidR and dowifi for the tips. Thanks to alanrf for the info.

I did a clean install of the latest version and made the checkings dowifi suggested.

Well, the things solved partially, but the absence of posts relating the same problem I’m having indicates that Avast has nothing to do with it.

But the fact is: my connection is odd. Download speeds are now very good, but the sites navigation is malfunctioning, it is very slow on foreign sites. With only 4 tabs open in IE I’m getting messages “internet explorer can’t show web page”.

Anyway I expect the next Avast update to solve my problem as Vlk stated in other topic.

Well, frankly, version 4.7.1074 wasn't quite, ehm, expected (don't ask ) and will be followed by another build (in about a week). Cheers Vlk

I somehow doubt the next release will address your problem, as there really hasn’t been any activity in the forum relating to this other than your post.

First the problem has to be notified and identified as a problem with avast and then a solution found, tested and released and a week would be impossibly short.

Have you tried firefox and or opera browsers, does the problem exist with them ?

Which other programs are connecting the web at this time? Any P2P?
Which is your ISP?

I’m not aware of any changes in the recent build that might cause this.
Does it help if you stop the Web Shield or Network Shield provider?

Hello old pal, how are you? ;D

My ISP is OI internet. I use uTorrent and rarely emule. They coexisted harmonically before. But I think I found the root of my problem. Here it goes…

I made an investigation here at home and discovered my little son searched for games and installed a spyware called Zango or Shopping report. He used my administrative account when I was out and made this mess. My wife uninstalled it (and didn’t say to me) but the add-ons kept active in the internet explorer (why doesn’t IE have the uninstall option of the add-ons as Firefox has?).

A squared free ignored it, Spyware terminator reported it as unknown software but didn’t remove it neither in normal nor secure mode of Windows. I removed the dll of shopping report, disabled it in IE, but it keeps listed as an IE add-on. The things normalized as far as it can.

My appologises to Avast! team. :-X

No problem, thanks for the update.

I trust you have sent your son to bed with no supper (only joking). Kids are very computer literate these days, I guess you need to change your password for your account or add one if you didn’t have one already ;D

Download and run Autoruns.
Go to Internet Explorer tab and delete the entry.

Tech, it isn’t IE that needs to be stopped but the IE Add-on and I don’t think autoruns caters for disabling/removing add-ons.

It does… try.

Ah, I hadn’t noticed that tucked away in the Internet Explorer Tab, thanks.

I must say I very rarely use autoruns as it presents huge amounts of data, I tend to use CodeStuff Starter and I was thinking autoruns was similar.

Thought HJT may help in trying to find what is restoring the add-in.

Me too.
