I downloaded Avast4 (dutch version and english) Home FREE edition.
I have Windows XP Home and i’m an administrator account.
Everytime I launch the setup it unpacks for a few seconds and then I get the error “you don’t have enough user rights”. I tried making another administrator account but same effect…
How can I solve this problem?

Mostly this is caused by a infection.
I suggest you run a online scan first to see if it comes up with something.

Log in as real administrator (can only be done through safe mode) and then try to install avast.
There is a registry key that has been changed by malware en only the real administrator can change it back. I just can’t remember what exact key it was a.t.m. But you should be able to reset permissions for the users through the real admin account and that should also work.
According to the log, the setup cannot create the registry key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software.
So, either you are not logged as an Administrator, or maybe you changed some permissions to the registry keys so that you cannot write this key even under Administrator…
There is no sub in the Security folder.
I did find a “ALWIL Software” in the Software folder but i can’t open it. Seems like my brother must’ve installed (and uninstalled) Avast! before…
I can’t delete it nor change the name tho of that key.
OK, laten we even wat anders proberen.
Log in als admin (in safe mode, dus NIET als gebruiker met admin rechten, maar de echte admin account)
Maak een neiuwe gebruiker aan en geef deze admin rechten.
Reboot en login als deze nieuwe gebruiker.
Probeer dan avast te installeren.
Laten we eens kijken wat er dan gebeurt.
Zolang ik die register key niet kan herinneren, heb ik nog maar 1 oplossing.
Een reparatie install van XP.
boot van de XP cd
kies een nieuwe installatie
NIET(!) formatteren of partitioneren
Als windows vraagt waar te installeren, kies dan de folder waar windows nu in is geinstalleerd
(meestal c:\windows)
Op deze manier zul je geen gegevens verliezen, maar eerst een backup maken kan nooit geen kwaad. Je zal maar net een stroomuitval krijgen terwijl je hier mee bezig bent …
Na de reparatie install wel even naar de windows update website gaan om te zorgen dat alle patches/updates weer geïnstalleerd worden.
Dit is een methode welke ik zelf regelmatig toepas bij mijn werk en nog nooit gefaald heeft.
