Not much is new in 4.8 0_0

Hmm I think if Avast already detect spyware in previous versions the only thing new is the rootkit detection. Am I right ?

basicaly i think yes, but now Avast! is officialy a Spyware-scanner because it now is certified as such by West-Coast-Labs

Quote from the Press release:

avast! antivirus 4.8 is a major technology upgrade to the avast! product line, which includes the addition of anti-spyware detection, certified by West Coast Lab’s Checkmark process, and the implementation of anti-rootkit capabilities, all directly from within avast! antivirus.

Another significant new change in 4.8 is the introduction of a much stronger self-defense for avast itself. This reduces the opportunity for other malicious or poorly written software to damage the avast installation.

Improvements make the software more reliable, function better, that’s what matters, every little bit helps.

Lets also not lose sight of the fact that this is a 4.7 to 4.8 update a small .1 program increment and in my opinion quite a lot has improved in that .1 update.

The anti-rootkit scan happens in the standard windows boot scan, so you shouldn’t need to do a scheduled boot-time scan (start the simple or enhanced user interface, menu, schedule boot-time scan).

There is no separate anti-spyware scan, no point, it is incorporated in normal scanning and on-demand scans. I would leave ST installed as there were no compatibility isues reported in the beta trials with other anti-spyware applications.

thanks davidr

Your welcome.

Ok thanks for the info. Well actually I love Avast updates cause it doesn’t require much user interaction. Unlike comodo where on must updates you have to uninstall the program and install the new version to make it work properly.

You’re right… it’s very annoying the process of uninstall, boot, install, boot… :stuck_out_tongue:
