Should you ever receive a call from someone telling you there is something wrong with your computer don’t answer any questions that person asks, or at least not a truthful answer.
A short while ago someone called and told me there was something wrong with my computer, I told her I did not have a problem and she said there is something wrong with my Windows OS. She asked me if I was the main user on my computer and I told her a lot of people use it, which isn’t true. I told her I knew this was a scam and I was going to call the Police and she hung up. Checked my caller ID and it showed 10 zero’s so I couldn’t call her back.
I was lying on my bed trying to take a nap and the room was dark so I couldn’t see who was calling. Had I have seen the number I wouldn’t have answered the phone.
Better yet if the person says you have something wrong with your computer, just hang up. That’s what I should have done. :-[
This is nothing new, this scam (and slight variants of it) has been doing the rounds for some considerable time. It has even made it into many ordinary newspapers.
Live and Learn.Don’t believe 99% of what you read, hear,or what your friends tell you.If you know there’s nothing wrong with your PC don’t try to fix it.
UPDATE,UPDATE,Update.
I know this is old news but I’m sure their are some people who are so naive they would believe what these scammer’s say and answer their questions because they actually believe there is something wrong with their computer.
Unfortunately this isn’t to help them as they are unlikely to see this.
Support forums are by their nature populated either by people already experiencing problems or those seeking to help them. That is why other information mediums are better placed to educate/inform them, newspapers, radio, TV (this type of thing has been on those) and possibly social networking media.
I remember the day when a Indian called saying all of ours computer were infected with CIH or something. My Dad played along seemingly to know nothing about computers. Then said. “Well guess what my computer is messed up my ***. I work for the ITS Departement of (A University (Not saying the name given it’ll tell you guys where I live)). So go take your scam stuff elsewhere.”
Rule #1: Any company will NOT contact you if their is something wrong with your computer. If their is then don’t take advice from them. They’ll hack your computer till it doesn’t exist.
