My computer has been acting up, at times all windows will basically stop responding. I will not even be able to close them. Sometimes if I wait long enough then I can close them and do a restart. There have been a couple of times I have had to force a shut down without closing the windows. Avast doesn’t show anything, MalwareBytes doesn’t show anything. I did run the scans recommended in the “Logs to assist in cleaning Malware” and am attaching the results below.
Thank you!
When it starts to slow down could you quickly open task manager and note which programme is taking all the CPU
I sure will and will post here.
Thank you!
Your logs look squeaky clean
Well this time it says Firefox 531,044 and climbing. I do have 6 widows open, one is email, one is this window and 4 are where I am trying to find the best price of something. One of those windows has a streaming video that is running. Hmmm, If logs are squeaky clean that is great! Then it would be a program type issue right? Sometimes I will have “Lags” and then a message pops up that “Shock wave has crashed or is not responding” and I choose to close or end task what ever the option is it gives. Oh and I usually have Chrome and Firefox open at the same time. That way I can have business info open in Chrome and personal info open in Firefox. Occasionally I will open Explorer at the same time but it is for a very short length of time. I also have MSWord open.
3GB of RAM should be able to handle that reasonably well
I wonder if it is related to both FF and Chrome being open … I will check that out
Firefox can certainly be a bit of a resource hog I regularly see it over 500MB of RAM (with the plugin-container.exe taking another 80MB) but CPU usage doesn’t seem so bad. I certainly don’t notice any system slow down, specs in my signature.
I don’t use Chrome, but adding that to the equation could well have an impact. Then throw IE into the mix and you could well be getting tight on resources, given what other programs that might be running in the background.
When it acted up t his last time, I did not have IE open. I could move my mouse around but when I clicked on a webpage to open it back up it wasn’t opening the pages. Now, after I opened up the task manager and then went back I could click on them. Just a thought here. On a Yahoo group that I am on, and no I don’t use Yahoo mail, just groups, someone mentioned that if you have ever used “Gotowebinar” that you need to delete all files because they use a lot of space or something. I have done several 'Gotowebinars" and have one coming up on Monday. Would it help if I went in and found all of the Gotowebinar stuff and deleted it?
Disc space would not be a major problem unless it is in your temporary internet files. Do you regularly empty chrome and firefox caches
You know what, I haven’t been!!! Even though I have had this computer for about a year, I still haven’t figured out how to find the temporary internet files in Chrome and Firefox. I was running XP and this computer is Win7, the Laptop we inherited is Win8 and boy is it really different. I need to figure out what to do and do it regularly. I used to do it once a month. I have gone in to the history and tried deleting the history but in Firefox it kept not responding and then I guess I got busy with work and forgot about the issue and never followed up to try and figure out the problem.
I think we are on to something here. I opened up the History side bar in Firefox. Right clicked on DEC them clicked on Delete, then in just a few seconds Firefox stopped responding. I had to force Firefox to close then reopen to post this. Am I doing something wrong in trying to delete the History files? There files 6 months old that I can’t delete.
Thanks a Bunch!!!
A quick way to clear the temp files is to run this programme once a week or more often if you wish
Clear Cache/Temp Files
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
[*] Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
[*]It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
[*]Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
[*]Once it’s finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.
That will do all browsers and temp folders
I found this for firefox
1.At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox button, go over to the History menu and select Clear Recent History… …
2.Select how much history you want to clear: …
3.Finally, click the Clear Now button and the window will close and the items you’ve selected will be cleared.
There is also an extension that will limit the amount of history kept. I wonder why this cannot be done manually https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/expire-history-by-days/
Thank you will install TFC on both systems and suggest it to our daughter for her new laptop.
Fixing to run TFC. Thought I would let you know that FF stopped responding while doing the deletes. It did delete all the history. Then it stopped responding again and when I forced it closed I got this message…“Plugin container for FF has stopped working.” Is that something I need to work on fixing?
There is also a firefox file/process called plugin-container.exe, forcing a shutdown of firefox may well have crashed that. I don’t believe it is an issue, restarting firefox should ultimately restart this process also.
I think it might have been best to close your browsers before running TFC for the first time as there may well have been a lot of temporary files, some of which may have been current.
I had closed all the browsers but the one I had the Avast Forum up in. The download went to my downloads folder not the desktop. Fixing to move it. Now to see how the computer runs over the next few days.
Thanks!
Keep us informed please
Well, Having issues this am. It is like the mouse is not working at times. Sometimes I see it moving around as a pointer but will not click, other times, it is hidden. I am waiting to see if the issue was the weather .com site as I had opened it and forgot to close it back. It suddenly started playing a commercial after I had trouble with the mouse and once I was finally able to close that site things seem better. A window came up saying something to the effect of an issue with script on the page I clicked “Debug” then finished closing the site. All I have open right now is FF, two Facebook pages email and now this page. Fixing to get off of the computer for awhile and will see again later.
Thanks for all you do Essexboy!!!
That sounds like a system lock on the script running … See if it happens on other pages
