Not sure if my system is clean...

Hello forum,

basically last night, Avast detected a rootkit (I can’t remember the name nor find it in the Virus vault since I pressed delete) and I got “spooked”.

As advised by my Avast software, I ran a boot scan and it didn’t detect anything.

However, I decided to follow the guide and Mbam found one threat.

I’ve attached the files as required by the guide.

Thank you for your time, consideration and patience.

since avast detected a rootkit, also attach aswMBR rootkit diagnostic log

[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

@Pondus, I’m still waiting for aswMBR to finish scanning and will post the log asap.

@Essexboy, I’ll run OTL as soon as I post the aswMBR log.

Thanks for the swift replies.

Sorry for the delay, here is the log

@Essexboy: Here is the second OTL log.

Essexboy is in bed now…check back tomorrow

How is the computer behaving now ?

I would recommend that you remove what is left of Norton by using their removal tool available here https://support.norton.com/sp/en/uk/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us

My computer is running ok I guess.

I was surprised I still had Norton on my system and I’ve now used their removal tool.

Do I still have McAfee remnants on my system aswell? I’m not sure if it was un-installed cleanly either.

For McAfee run this removal tool

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

It seemed that I still had a “Mcafee agent” still installed so i un-installed it before running the removal tool. Apparently it did not fully remove everything and it produced a log. I also un-installed java 7 update 25 too since i don’t need/use it.

A few minutes later, avast detected a rootkit called mfer kdk .sys so i am doing another bootscan at the moment.

That is part of McAfee, Avast probably detected it during removal

you should bookmark this site … lots of uninstaller that you may need http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/

@Essexboy: Nothing reported from the boot scan. System seems to be functioning fine.

@Pondus: Thanks. I’ve now bookmarked it.

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run AdwCleaner and press uninstall

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

Clear Restore Points

Go Start > All Programmes > Accessories > System tools
Right click Disc Cleanup and select run as administrator
When it pops up at the first prompt select OK after it has done some calculations the tabs will appear
Select More Options tab
Press Sytem Restore and Shadow Copies Cleanup button

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit
[*]Microsoft Windows Update

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?Keep safe

Thanks for the help

My pleasure
