Installed avast a couple or so days ago and so far I haven’t been able to run a scan. When I downloaded it I got a page that said someone would be emailing me about their product in case I have any questions. Never happened. Surprised? Nope.
Guess I will need to find a better “workable” product. Don’t worry I wont ask anyone here for any suggestions.

I have exactly the same prob. my O.S. is Wind98(se?) and when I tried to scan it just kept on scanning for over 3 hours on the deepscan setting, so I shut the scanner down, restarted it and selected the minimum scan setting but after it scanned for about 2 hours I shut it down also.

I also didn't receive any email after downloading the softwareYou only get 1 email after you have registered on the website for the home version. Alwil does not send unsolicited mails. NEVER! With downloading a version of Avast you will NEVER get a email from Alwil. There is no need for it.
Scanning can take a long time.
That is a known fact and nothing to worry about.
Tell me, why do think you should get a email while you only have downloaded a application?
Think about it. Would be a strange world if you get a email for every download you do.
The email that I was referring to was the email on the download site that bp 1md made mention of.

Ok, HERE is the download page.
Now tell me where it says you will get a email.
As I said before. You wil NOT get a email if you just download Avast.
You will only get 1 email if you register for the free (home) version.
It will contain the license number you need and some instructions on how to apply it.
But that is the only email you will get.
Alwil does not send out unsolicitated emails.

Make sure it is not ‘caught’ by a spamfilter or other mail filter.
Registration is working without problems.
I just tested it and got the key within 1 minute in my mail box.
Also make sure you are using not one of those free email adresses.

And hopefully installing the key will fix the scanning prob.
Let us know if you have recieved the key.
You can always reregister with the same email address if needed.
I know some email servers are collecting mails and only send them every x minutes.
So it may take some time before you receive the mail.
But you should receive it within (let’s say) 30 minutes.
EDIT:
If you don’t get the mail within 30 minutes. Let us know, so we can help you trouble shoot.
I have now received my registr. key and will let you know if it makes any diff. with the quick scan later. 
Registered or not, it shouldn’t make any difference in how Avast scans.
Without the key, you will have a trial function but it should be fully functional.

Since you are new to Avast, I suggest you spend some time reading the help and also on browsing/reading this board.
Make yourself familiar with the options/settings Avast is offering the user.
Both have a lot of information.
