Notice that avast 5 system is unsecured

Hi All,

I have avast 5 installed on a Dell Inspiron 530S running Windows Vista Home Premium. Yesterday I noticed a red ‘X’ covering the avast icon. When I investigated and opened the file I saw a notice that it wasn’t working. When I try to re-start it asks for my administrator password and when I entered the password and re-attempt to re-start the system it once again asks for the same password. In other words it is stuck in a loop. When I try to run a scan from the Command Line it is not working. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If you have a blue icon with a red “x” you have avast 4.8 and not 5.
I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

Hi Tech,
Thank you for your advice. My icon is orange with a white ‘C’. I forgot to mention that I had the Internet Security version for home use. I paid appprox. $90 for it in Jan, 2010 and it expires in 2 years from that date. My payment was sent through PayPal to Digital River GMBH. I have followed your directions; Uninstalled; Cleaned in Safe Mode; re-booted and re-installed Avast 5. However, when I insert my license file I get a message through the Subscription Menu that all is OK but, then when I try to Update, it runs for a few seconds before it stops and says my subscription has expired. I also received an email from avast.com that states they have “no record” of my having purchased a subsription from my email address (gdawg65@yahoo.com). What is the connection between avast.com and Digital River GMBH? Was my money sent to the wrong address? Oh, my email address hasn’t changed. Can someone help me with this problem?

I hope they can answer you if you send an email to sales(at)avast(dot)com
I think it’s not good to let your email address public here (due to spammers).

I am having a problem with a paid Avast Internet Security 5.
My subscription says “active” but my orange Avast icon has a white cross with a red background.
This is now for over 72 hours.

I have sent 4 messages to Support and no reply… Should I contact PAYPAL NOW AND CANCEL AVAST ??

I suggest that you do a clean reinstall as suggested by Tech and download the 5.0.545 version AIS: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe if you didn’t save your last download.

Did you have avast 4.8 installed before ?
If so the above clean install is advised and when running the Uninstall Utility, first run it for 4,8 and then for 5.0.

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
If so you would need to ensure it and all remnants are removed.

Orange ball with white cross? ??? Are you really using avast?
Did you try to repair your installation through Control Panel? Which was your old antivirus and firewall before avast?

In avast5 the white cross on the Red circle over the avast icon is indicating it isn’t running

Oh, you’re right. My fault. I just remember the yellow exclamation point (!).

No problem,

Now we wait for Allen to respond to the question about other AVs. Or try the clean reinstall if avast 4.8 previously installed and see if that resolves the problem.

I also had a problem with my Avast 5 but, after following the advice on this Forum (ie uninstall and reinstall) evrything seems to be fine. Thanks for the advice, everyone. ;D

No problem, welcome to the forums.
