ICSA says “Fail” for Avast. At the top of the list. I dunno why:

I wonder why ??? ???

Maybe someone from Alwil can assist us with an answer on this ???

I’m worried
Why, if it never had ICSA accreditation we would be none the wiser and no less secure. Since there is no write-up on the ICSA site why a product failed, it is not very helpful. If I remember rightly there are a number of hoops to go through in order to get accreditation that aren’t detection related.
So we will have to await some input from those that might know.
Do I feel less secure, am I worried, no. Why, because I continue to exercise safe hex and take additional precautions, multi-level/application approach, DropMyRights, Firefox with NoScript, etc. etc.
Remember also that Avast Pro which isn’t to much different than the Home version, did very well in both recent the AV Comparatives Tests for On Demand and Pro Active/Retrospective. They are really the only ones I would be concerned about. Removal of course is also important, but didn’t Avast pass the West Coast Level Two Test?
Well.
I have got a theory, when you are infected and very infected, i’d prefer format my PC and no problems. When an Av do a desinfection, usually, if the infection is very hard, erase system files, and PC becomes unestable.
More important than the best AV in the world is a safe surfing and install safe software.
I use FF with Noscript, ABP and DMR too, hehehe.
And i use returnil when i want test a program
Actually I just checked West Coast and I didn’t see Avast under the Disinfection Testing Section. So I guess it either wasn’t tested, or didn’t pass that particular certification. Now I am a little worried as AVG did and I chose Avast over it.
Now I am a little worried as AVG did and I chose Avast over it.Sorry to be so blunt, but it's still your choice as it is for all of us. :)
At this point, I’ll wait for a response from Alwil.
As David pointed out, we are still as safe (or unsafe) as we where before this post was made. ;D
Well I avoid formats and reinstalls like the plague which is why I have drive imaging software, which take an exact image of a partition, HDD, etc. This image can be restored if you ever get into a situation that would take longer to resolve than it would take to restore the last image you made (in my case 20 minutes).
So I make weekly backup images of my two partitions on my primary HDD (as part of my regular system maintenance) and save them on my secondary HDD or they can be burned to DVD.
20 minutes is much preferable to a format, reinstall of windows, all your software not to mention your customized settings and having to get windows updates, etc. no thank you very much.
But i have not got a program for make images of my Hard drives
I would suggest you also look disk imaging software. I use Drive Image 7.1, the last version by PowerQuest before it was bought by Symantec and merged into its Norton Ghost disk imaging software, another option id Acronis true Image, there are others, most of them are paid options.
I take an image back-up of my primary hard disk partitions every week as part of my system maintenance. This is saved to my second HDD or it can also be written to a DVD. I also back-up volatile data files, .doc, .xls, etc. along with emails, bookmarks, address book, registration keys, etc. (anything you don’t want to lose) every day sometimes several times a day.
So if I experience a serious problem then I just restore my last back-up disk image (takes about 15 minutes) followed by the last daily data back-up (takes seconds rather than minutes) and I will have lost virtually nothing. So about 20 minutes in all.
Compare that with your experience (if you have had to perform a reformat and reinstall) and the money I paid for my disk imaging software would have paid for itself if it had to be used just once if you valued your time at just £5 per hour. I have had to use it several times (not virus related) where it has hauled my a** out of the fire, it is an absolute god send.
I’m not about to give up Avast over this, and I’m sure it will be straightened out. However I do like the idea that besides detecting with the best of them, Avast will also disinfect with the best of them. That’s all. Maybe worried was to strong of a word, so I’ll change it to just concerned. LOL. And one the reasons I am not giving up on Avast is because of this forum and the people in it. Take care all.
Any official word about what happened?
E.G. I think just one FP will ‘fail’ you.
All,
Vlk have already answer this question ages ago about the ICSALABS Certification
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=29765.msg245026#msg245026
I agree with VLK.
I’m not worried ;D
Could be right. I hoped that issue would’ve been resolved by now.
So do I mate I hope Vlk or Igor or somebody please say something…I don’t want to get myself into crazy ideas scrapping Avast and jumping on AVG I’ve had way to much trust in Avast and this is why I love IT…Avast is the only body guard I have to protect my PC.
And please please don’t talk about Full of Crap Norton…I’ve already flush that down the toilet long ago ;D and I don’t want to see the Never Ending Story down the far end of the sewerage pipeline ;D.
Yes that is the post I remember dealing with method rather than detection, crazy, ICSA should be more concerned with protection than how it goes about it.
Problem being it is ICSA’s football and they aren’t going to let anyone play with it unless they play by their rules. Also when someone questions your rules instead of taking it as constructive it is taken as criticism and heels get dug in and intransigence sets in. So I’m not too surprised that it takes time.
