Novice needing help!

I make no apology to you experienced people for my ignorance but that’s where you can guide me/help me. :-\ For months I’ve been getting emails with so called announcements re the stock exchange and today I got a different one all in gobbledegook! I don’t know how to scroll thro my emails without opening this rubbish and risking unleashing some terror on my poor old pc. How can I manage this and where can I send them? :-*

Welcome…
Are you using Windows XP?
Which program of emails are you using? Outlook Express?
Where are you trying to see this email, in the Internet Explorer (webmail) or in your email program?

Do you have avast installed in your computer?

What you’re describing is called SPAM and isn’t anything avast! will prevent. Avast! will scan the email for viruses but doesn’t filter good email from Spam.
What you need is a Spam filter. Please use the forum search function and you’ll find many references.
Here is one to start with:

 Hi Singer :

I get the same kind of undesirable emails as you; since
the web-based email acounts I use do NOT have a free
"SPAM" filter program available, I just "Delete" them .
When I first started out, I used the info at :

Thanks for replies.
I’m using Windows XP and Outlook Express.
Erm, I’m not trying to see these emails but they’re in my Outlook Express inbox with people’s names attached and silly subject titles. A different type today was from “similar hardware” and titled “name added pageand job”. They’re now in a spam folder in my inbox.
I have avast! antivirus installed plus windows firewall and spybot search and destroy. My 17 yr old set these up for me.
Thanks, Bob. I find this whole thing so confusing! I’ll follow your suggestions. ::slight_smile:

My Gmail accounts seem to be quite peaceful. Some people say the same thing about their Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail accounts. Personally, I don’t use Outlook Express but I find Spamaware for OE quite popular.

BTW, Eudora seems to go for open-source and I am looking forward to it, too.

That’s a nice link, Spritsongs. I think I could make use of it, thanks.

Hi Singer,
If you only check one email account, you might consider MailWasher.
Which is an excellent spam eliminator and actually checks you email at your ISP
before it’s ever downloaded to your computer.
You’ll find full details here.

The program is also available at MySharedFiles

Enjoy and welcome to the forum.

Yes, even with the limitation on free version, MailWasher is still a popular app. In fact, I didn’t name it simply because it was on the list of Spiritsongs.

This has nothing to do with the topic I started! :o I just wanted to send Spiritsongs a personal message to do with her/his (?) choice of name but I’m blowed if I can work out how to do it! ???
Sorry to use this space for such a simple problem!
Thanks for the tips you’ve given me. I’ve downloaded Mailwasher and will see what difference it makes.

Sorry, there were a sad incident with spam using avast forum and the IM feature was blocked temporary.
Right now you can’t send an IM to him. So never mind opening this thread
