NTFS scan of drives (chkdsk.exe)

Hey, I recently had BSOD while installing Windows updates and from that while I’m getting NTFS drive scan at every system startup. When I let It run It says the drive is hardly damaged and scan is interrupted with unkown error. If you can help me - How can I make that NTFS scan to not be run after every system start-up?
BTW Besides that everything runs smoothly anyways…

Here I won’t get any help I guess. I go to ask somewhere else.

I’m not sure what you mean by an NTFS scan ?

Do you mean chkdisk as that is an integrity style check and could be an indication that A) your system didn’t shut down properly or B) your hard disk could be having problems.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHKDSK

Scan with CHKNTFS /D means to restore the machine to the default behavior; all drives are checked at boot time and chkdsk is run on those that are dirty.
C option will mean that chkdskwill be scheduled to run at next reboot,

Thanks for reply.
I don’t know whatever It is but It does delaying my computer startup uselessly and I just want It to not start. Please.
BTW It’s something like “Checking file system on C:. The type of the file system is NTFS. Press any key to skip checkup. But we strongly recommend you to do It.” then after about 20 seconds It type “Unkown error. System is critically damaged. Please use Windows recovery system tool and restore system to state before damage”…

Sounds like you may have some file corruption, why that may have happened could be for the reasons I mentioned before.

I think that that is running a chkdisk scan which is looking for bad sectors on your hard disk.

I would certainly recommend as a precautionary measure that you back-up your system or you could lose it if there is a disk failure (hard disk imaging software is best). You could manually run the chkdisk function and see what it reports, if you don’t know how check the link I gave in my previous post.

Should I “start > run > chkdsk.exe” ? Cannot It damage my system more than It already is?

It shouldn’t do any harm, check that link I gave for the other switches that can be uses also, but essentially you want to know if there are any bad sectors on the hard disk.

Thank you for replies. So I ran chkdisk and It found no problems (WTF). Also - I looked at some websites and I found a way to turn off that corrupted chkdisk starting on system start. It was in registry path
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\BootExecute I had to change autocheck autochk * to autocheck autochk /k:c. I hope It will solve problem and won’t cause any problem.

Hi danny96,

That was great you reported back here. This will also be helpful for others that have a similar problem and would later come to this thread for answers.
Thanks for posting and the feed-back, and keep us informed how your machine behaves now…
Additionally I have found this troubleshooting link on that issue: http://www.technize.com/check-disk-chkdsk-runs-every-time-windows-starts/ link article author = SANIX
Again thanks for the heads-up,

You’re welcome and thanks for the feedback.

Whilst I’m wary of treating a symptom (e.g.) killing the message/action rather than the true cause. Though I suspect that finding that cause would be a tough ask, so I don’t blame you for the easier action.

In the link polonus gave there is talk of a repair install of the OS resolving this however, this message that you are getting after 20 seconds, “Unkown error. System is critically damaged. Please use Windows recovery system tool and restore system to state before damage.”

I don’t know if you have tried the System Restore function, me I’m not a great fan of it as it can have unexpected consequences. Or the other option mentioned is the recovery system tool ‘recovery console’ I believe it is called.

These are possibly less hassle than a Repair Install of Windows, which puts your system back to the version of your Windows version on the Microsoft CD\DVD. You would then need to do all of the windows updates since that point, lots of hassle.

This is why I’m an advocate of hard disk imaging software as my backup and recovery option.

No I haven’t tried Windows restore function because when I used It last time about year ago It totally screwed up entire computer that I had to reinstall it completely. I don’t know why that windows restore thingy exist because It everytime do everything wrongly. As you said - I will do a backup and nothing more. Thanks again.

You’re welcome.

Yes, for me I don’t have 100% confidence in System Restore either, since I have used hard disk imaging software I have disabled system restore.

If you search for the Recovery Console or Windows Recovery Environment in the win7, Start, Help and Support, it will give you some information. But it does say this is for IT pros.

Another problem here. There are updates to install. But the system is not able to install them. When It starts installing them it stucks at 0% and cannot be cancelled. Even worse - when I let It to install updates before shutdown the system stucks for half of hour and then It says “Update failed” and shutdown PC. I hate Microsoft.

Most likely a hardware or other problem. Nothing at all to do with Microsoft.

Yes, just like bob3160 says, corrupted or missing files. Time to get and insert the repair disks.
You could do a check up with Microsoft Fixit Center to pinpoint to the crux of the troubles.

I ran Windows update fix - It fixed 2 problems. Now If I try to install updates I get “Some of the updates weren’t installed.” “Couldn’t install updates”
"Code: 800B0100. An unkown error occured "
Microsoft and their fix tools everytime do more harm than good.

If you don’t like MS. Why use it ???

By the way, the problem with your computer still isn’t Microsoft related. But, they do make a good scapegoat.
See if this will help you solve your update problem:

Well I don’t know why, but I had my firewall already turned off O_O. So I turned it on back. BTW and no - doesn’t help… I’ll maybe format It. Or is there any way to just repair It without losing any data and without needs to update everything again? Thanks.
