Numerous EMail Resident Providers

Im a little confused about why there is so many different Resident Providers for email? ???

Exchange 2007
Exchange 2000/2003
MS SMTP 2000/2003
Outlook/Exchange
Internet Mail

  1. I’m assuming that “Exchange xxxx” should only be enabled ON the SBS. Although the workstations are talking to an Exchange Server, this is where Outlook/Exhchange comes in.
  2. Outlook/Exchange is obvious and should be enabled on all workstations
  3. Internet Mail - I presume this only needs to be enabled if the user has any POP3/IMAP accounts in Outlook? Or is it purely for any POP3/IMAP accounts that are accessed /outside/ of Outlook (i.e. does outlook/exhcange plugin look after Outlook completely?) ?
  4. MS SMTP 2000/2003 - No idea about this one?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks, Mark

Exchange is the e-mail server… so yes it should only by active at servers with exchange (either normale deployments or SBS)

ms smtp is for servers without exchange (this could also be workstations that are used for smtp traffic) its a very basic setup to get some email possibilities, tho i believe exchange 2003 still required it to be installed

outlook/exchange is the one you want to have active when your using outlook and your presumption abuot internet mail seems to be right
