It appears that there may be a conflict between the NVIDIA graphics driver (version 260.99 and later) and Avast 5.1.889 on my installation.
I have tried installing the driver first and then Avast and also Avast first and then the driver.
If I install Avast first, reboot, then the driver, reboot, the system hangs after login at a blank screen, after this I must hard reset the machine. CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn’t do anything. After this, Avast issues a message that says it can’t update and that I should try to update it manually. If I try to update manually, it has the error “Last encountered error: The system cannot find the file specified.” Program updates also fail with the same error.
If I install the video driver first, then Avast, after the reboot the system does not hang on login, but it still exhibits the same problem with updating.
Even after uninstalling the video driver, Avast will still not update.
Reinstalling Avast does not fix the problem.
This happens with both builds 260.99 and 266.35 of the NVIDIA driver.
They can be downloaded from http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us
Just search for my graphics card listed below.
In addition, I have think this issue may also be causing BSODs on my machine.
For now I will use a different antivirus but would like to switch back as soon as the issue is fixed!
