I’ve been trying to change from ODBC to XML, but I keep getting this error:
26.10.2004 12:49:00 1098787740 SYSTEM 1180 During the parsing of C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.xml XML document, following error occurred: C.
There is no avast4.xml file present at any time.
Everything works, but my settings are not saved.
I’ve seen this question asked several times, but have found no answer.
I’ve tried repair, uninstall, re-install…you name it.
How can I change to avast4.xml???
Is there write access to the DATA directory?
Error “C” is quite as expected, meaning that the file cannot be read (which is no surprise as it does not exist). BTW This message is not emitted when the file is being saved but when it’s being read…
Write access should be ok, as Avast4.mdb works in the same directory.
…but how can the file be created?
As I said earlier, everything seems to work ok except the settings for the On-Access Scanner.
I’m trying to use xml database too.
how did you created the avast4.xml file ?
and shouldn’t avast create itself if it isn’t found ?
(is this a bug or I’m missing something?)

Maybe we both are missing something…
I just opend avast4.bdm in Access, and exported to a XML-file.
Of course the content in that file is not correct, but at least I got rid of the error message in the log on every reboot.
If you use default settings in the On-Access Scanner, you won’t notice that the file don’t keep the settings.

I saved the file, used the avast!ExternalControl.exe to change to XML.
After the restart, the Network Shield was terminated.
The errormessage in the log is gone, but at startup you can actually have ANY XML-file to get rid of that.
Started NetworkShield, and changed sensitivity to High on the Standard Shield.
After rebooting the computer, the NetworkShield was again terminated, and StandardShield changed to Normal.
I have tried changing to xml and I do not get errors but my settings are not saved either. I know that before, if you made the changes and then terminated the provider and then re-booted, the changes were then saved but that trick has not seemed to work for me anymore.
Isn’t 4.5 the Beta Version? If it is, I am still on the latest non Beta Version. I was waiting for the new release to come out. I did download the Beta version but was afraid to install it.
It seems that when using XML, my Win98se re-start problem seems to go away. It hangs every once in a while and I have to shut down manually and restart it myself. Pc shutdown always seems to work fine though.
4.5.504 is beta but very very stable and won’t bring you troulble. Note that the email protection changed too. Now it’s everything automatic. Please, set up your email account just as avast does not exists. It will detect the pop3/smpt/imap ports and scan your messages.
If I install the Beta Version, will I need to reset all my current settings? When the new release comes out, will Avast update to the new version again?
No, all settings will be keeped (or kept, how do we say this?).
It’s just an update like the others. When final realease comes, it will be updated too. It’s automatic, simple, secure… This is avast world 8)
