OE not sending outgoing mail

I realize you get this question all the time in here, but so far, everything I’ve tried has not worked. I noticed yesterday that my outgoing email in OE would not go. It finally went out later in the day. Today I got up and Avast had requested my computer be rebooted. When I did, again my OE will not send my email. I turned off the Trend PCillian Antivirus (that came with my new Dell computer) hoping the conflict it is having with Avast would be corrected, but so far no soap.

I have a Dell 512 80 Ghz with Windows XP. I’m attaching the error message screenshot. I’m sort of a novice when it comes to this sort of thing…LOL I’m more of a graphics designer than computer geek…

Firstly running two resident scanners isn’t recommended (even when disabled there may be processes running and or registry entries that avast will see and possibly disable a part of avast to avoid conflict), rather than providing twice the protection it just gives twice the possibility of conflict, which can lead to a system lock-up or vulnerable. I think you will have to decide on what AV to have resident and uninstall the other, boot and uninstall, boot reinstall the one you decided on.

avast doesn’t support SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encrypted email, the whole point of the encryption so people can’t intercept it. So using SSL on the normal email SMTP port 25 is going to have a problem because it can scan the encrypted data. When the usual SSL port is used avast ignores it and it goes through without avast intercept.

I don’t use gmail so I can’t say if your settings are correct.

Ok, so if I want to use Avast, I should not only disable the Trend, but also uninstall it? I would rather use the Avast because Trend allowed a Trojan in without noticing it. Not the kind of antivirus protection I wanted. As far as the SSL goes, I don’t know if I can change that, as Gmail requires it. I suppose that means that Avast is not going to work for me when using Gmail?

Oh, another thing, I cannot locate the Mail Protection Wizard in my Avast. I have done everything the Help files say, but there is no wizard in any of the settings (unless its staring me in the face and I’m just too dumb to realize it!!) If need be, I can disable Avast protection long enough to send out the mail I have stacked up.

I don’t know how avast would get arround your using the SMTP port for secure traffic, avast monitors the email ports 25, 110, 119 and 143 and it is expecting standard email protocols for those ports, it can’t unencrypt SSL traffic to scan it. So there would either be huge delays or possibly this error message being displayed because avast can’t scan SSL.

As I said I don’t use gmail so I can’t say if your setup is correct, I thought that for gmail it used the 587 port.

You might want to do a forum search as this one has come up before where a user had to use SMTP port 25 for secure email and I don’t think it was resolved but that I think was a restriction of their ISP.

This is from a google search about what email ports to use for SSL email:

Generic Settings
* Outgoing Server (SMTP)
* Servername -> mail.yale.edu
* Port -> 587 'Use name and password' or "authentication"
* User Name: netid
*

  For SMTP authentication and SSL encryption): Use secure connection TLS or SSL "Always", or "Required"

If you have a client that gives you the choice between SSL and TLS, choose TLS. You want to use port 587 for SMTP. TLS is preferred because it is a more recent standard.

If you not use SSL/TLS by setting this to “Always”, or “Required”, and you are not using POP/Kerberos you are probably sending passwords in clear text between where you are and Yale mailservers. For a discussion of issues with this please see this Information Security Office documentation.

Setting the email client to use port 587 for outbound (SMTP) email, is a way to avoid issues with NAV/SAV version 9 or higher, as wel as Internet providers which prevent sending encrypted data on port 25. Symantec (Norton) Antivirus version 9 (Symantec Anti Virus 9.0.0.338 in PC Amigo and the Software Library) which is the new standard for Windows machines, it does not support SSL or TLS encrypted email via port 25. It is possible to configure NAV/SAV 9 not to autoprotect Internet email -

Configure -> Internet Email Autoprotect-> (Uncheck) Internet Email Autoprotect

It’s less involved to use the Required,Alternate Port: 587.

If you are unable to configure this or have questions about the instructions please contact your support provider.

I think my best bet is to disable Avast from scanning my OE mail then. What a shame. But those are the settings I am to use for the Gmail account. If I get something else worked out that will work with the Gmail, I definately will active it again. Thanks for trying to help!

Can you scan inbound (pop3) email from GMail?
Which port and SSL settings are you using for smtp?
avast does scan outobund gmail accounts without trouble…

OMG!!! For some reason the smtp got set at port 25, when the actual settings should be 587. I have now reset it to the proper setting and its working!!! I should have thought of that already. Anyway, I now have Avast working properly on my OE Thank you so much for your help!

Bingo ;D

As I said I don't use gmail so I can't say if your setup is correct, I thought that for gmail it used the 587 port.

At least you have it working now.

Yes and I thank you for reminding me to check my settings!!!
