Office 2007 and Avast issues??

Folks,
does avast add an office plug-in?
I am having issues (for about the past 3 weeks or so) where ANY office file I try to open takes a VERY long time to open.
I get a “running virus scan…” in the status bar, and even for pretty small files it takes a very long time to be completed (10-20 MINUTES in some cases). Also, my Outlook tends to open VERY slowly.

I turned off avast (at least I THINK I did) – “stopped”, and I still get this issue (Running Home 4.7.1098 dec2007 build), Vista Home Premium, and Office 2007.

I have sent this in to one of the microsoft office forums, and they suggested I contact the AV support:

"Just because you ‘turned it off’ doesn’t mean that any Office plug-in that
it employs has been disabled.
As I advised, ask the AV support: that’s their purpose in life. "

SO, does avast use any Office plug-in that may be affecting this?? I have no other AV on the system, and although I turned if “off”, Word (or Excel) still seems to be running some sort of scan, which from what I’ve read can only come from an add-in. I don’t see any particular add-in in word that would seem to be anti-virus related.

Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated!!!

It seems you have Norton preinstalled in this computer and/or you haven’t uninstalled it properly. avast scans OLE (Office) files but does not use a plugin for it. Neither the message in status bar is from avast.
Can you run Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista.
If, by any reason, can be McAfee instead of Norton, please, post back.
Welcome to avast forums.

THANKS A MILLION!!!

That worked – I had Norton on the machine, but I never did the actual install --it kept bugging me every startup, but I never did do the install for it, so I’m a bit puzzled!! Anyway, I did the removal, rebooted, and now Office is behaving again.

Thanks for the help!!! this saved me a TON of aggravation!

It would be good if you also posted a follow-up to the MS office forum you posted, to clarify the problem being NAV also installed.

Welcome to the forums.

I wish Microsoft technician understand a little bit more about what is happening…
Anyway, glad you succeed and welcome to forums.
Feel free to come back any time you need help you just to change experiences 8)

P.S. David, welcome back

Not fully back, I still have a cast on (removable splint, so I can do physiotherapy), things are progressing reasonably well and it has only been 3 weeks today since I broke my wrist.

Another way to write patience ;D

Patience I have lots of, but it isn’t normally painful though ;D
