It seems that once I install Avast Free on my Windows 10 computer, I am not able to use Office 2013. The symptoms are as follows:
Before Avast Free install, all Office 2013 apps work as intended. Word, Excel, etc open up and when clicking a document the appropriate app opens immediately.
After I install Avast Free, my Office 2013 apps work intermittently or not at all. I have to click the Word or Excel icon about 3-4 times before it opens. And I don’t mean I spam the button right away. I click to open the app, I get the hour glass with mouse pointer icon, it goes away in about 5-6 seconds. I then wait another 5 seconds and try again. same resolution. by the 4th try, it opens. When I double click a document (e.g: docx, xlsx, etc) the appropriate app never opens; no matter how many times I try to open it, it just doesn’t open. Once I manage to open one of the apps, say Word, I can not open a secondary app like Excel. I can only have one Office app open at a time.
I then remove Avast Free, and everything goes back to normal with Office 2013.
I tried Installing/Uninstalling Avast Free a few times and I get the same exact outcome every time.
I don’t know what to do or what I can try. Could someone please advise if they have encountered this issue before?
It’s possible you’ve an anti-virus program conflict in Windows 10 when running avast!. Windows Defender in Win 10 is automatically enabled by default if no third-party anti-virus program is detected or installed and is supposed to be automatically disabled when a third-party anti-virus program is installed.
Repair your current version of avast!. Using Programs and Features, select avast! right-click that and from the drop-down list, select Repair. Allow the program to complete and reboot. Use administrative desktop to repair your installation.
Better now?
If this does not resolve your issues, then proceed to the next step. All steps are done in administrative desktop.
Uninstall avast using the same procedure as in step one, except you choose uninstall instead of repair. Reboot.
Double-click aswclear.exe and allow the system to boot into Safe Mode by choosing Accept. Use original settings here except you change program to Avast Free. Follow directions exactly. Allow aswclear.exe to complete. Reboot.
Ensure Windows Defender is off using details in reply # 2
Double-click avast free .2218 and allow to install. Reboot.
All operations are done while offline. Within Settings, change the original settings from automatically download and update to latest version of avast to no download and update. No surprises that way.
You’ll need to re-register your new copy of avast free.
I’ve just done a clean install of Avast free and still have no problems opening PowerPoint, Word, etc ???
I’m also reporting this to a Moderator. Let’s see if we get a reply from Avast.
There are multiple threads and significant numbers of people posting about issues with Avast 10.3.2225 causing Microsoft programs to fail. Too many for it to be a coincidence.
Microsoft Programs or Microsoft Office Programs ??? Are you getting any error messages ???
Since Avast has a 230 M user base, I would not consider a few complaints significant.
The problem has been reported to Avast.
Hi, and thanks for the replies. Sorry I didn’t get a chance to try the steps mentioned above, been busy with work, but I will try it over the weekend. However, although installing a previous version of avast may resolve the issues temporarily as I’ve read on the thread posted above, I’m a bit skeptical to do so considering AVs need to always be updated to latest version in order to be most effective. For now I’m using the standard Windows Defender. I’m hoping Avast will release an update that will fix this.
thanks everyone.
I’m experiencing the same issue with Win 10 64bit and AIS 10.3.2225. I’m using Office 2013 (Click to Run version) 15.0.4745.1002. Sometimes I need to start an Office app more than one time to have it running on my system. False starts terminate without any visible issue. From the task manage I can see the main app task (for example word.exe) starting and disappearing immediately.
Just generated and uploaded a support file with the support tool (just minidumps since I had no crash at the moment): 20150826_1510_SY9ER_956366261.zip with ID: SY9ER
Mine it’s the full version too…apart the fact I’ve got a special low cost licence with an offer obtained through the company I’m employed in. Let’s wait and see Avast developers response. Let me add that I tried a full online Office repair (using it’s repair wizard).
I’m not saying Office 2003 is same as 2013 but I would assume potential Avast issue is.
Seems Avast knows and has fixed but not rolled out…just FYI. https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=175445.0
we already have fix for Outlook 2003, it will be released in next few days. Regarding the Office 2013 issues we weren’t able to reproduce it yet, but working on it.
I am currently on Avast Internet Security with the latest Release-version to date and keep hitting the fan with my Office 365.
Regardless wether it be Word, Excel, PowerPoint or anything else, I get an instant “stopped working” followed sometimes by an Error-Window.
I am getting debuggable information on this error as the following:
Sry for german Error parameters, I hope you can figure the points out!
This is the same when opening anything else!
I am currently on Win 8.1 x64 with Defender and UAC turned completely off and no Virus warnings / positive Scans lately.
This incident keeps happening quite often and not only with Office, but also with Office-Services (Office Telemetry Agent) or the UpgradeToWin10-Service.
I hope there is a possible fix for this and I will try reinstall Avast-IS as soon I find the time and will check back on the forums regularly.
