What should I uncheck to get office docs to open more quickly while using Avast 4.x?
What are your standard shield settings, Normal (default setting) High or Custom ?
What version of office are you using ?
I don’t notice any appreciable slowing when opening office 97 word or excell documents my system specs are in my signature below.
I’m using Office 2003 and so far everything is set to Normal or Standard. Nothing was changed.
Do you happen to have MS Desktop Search installed as there have been some topics raised about that and outlook 2003, so not sure if that might have any effect on office 2003.
You could enable ‘Show detailed info on performed action’ in standard shield to see exactly what is being scanned when you open an office doc.

Have (or did) you have another AV installed in this system, if so what and how did you get rid of it ?
Or do you have any other security software anti-spyware/adware, etc. that could result in double scanning ?
Other than this I can’t think of anything that might slow the opening. How long do they take, what was it previously, what happens if you pause standard shield ?
Now that I’ve checked it, office is moving quickly. I’ll have to keep an eye on it. Maybe it’s faster after I’ve already opened it once.

Office is moving like a snail. I have to wait for files to open, way way too long. Mostly the first time. I note that the Avast globe stops during this time. Doesn’t this mean it’s scanning? I can’t work like this.
It is only scanning when the icon is rotating, if it has stopped and office still takes a long time to open then there is something else in the mix.
I suggest that you enable the Show detailed info on performed actions as I mentioned before, this will show exactly what is being scanned by avast.
Do you have the MSN Desktop Search or Toolbar which could be indexing your files, etc. ?
Can you check and answer the questions I asked before that weren’t answered as it went back to normal.
