Offline update of version 6

Hi all

I have succesfully updated my avast free 6 latest version, offlie, after reinstalig the progrm, using
the defs folder in this directory :

C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast

I have two questions :

  1. will this also work if i use this defs folder from avast free on aother system, which has pro or security versios ? Are defiitions the same ?

  2. if the above anwer is yes, there is another folder in that directory named " setup", that i thiks is the storage of files used when the Program Update is performed.

Is this folder also the same for free, pro and security and useable for each other on different systems that are installed ?

thanks !

Hi mj2000,

1) Yes, The definitions updates will be same for all the avast! versions. But it is recommented to download the VPS definitions from http://www.avast.com/download-update link and run in other computers to update avast! there.

2) No, In Setup folder there will be updates related with avast! components. So the setup folder wont be same for free, pro and security avast! versions.

Although the antivirus definitions (virus database) are the same for all editions of Avast, I don’t think that you can “transfer” them from one system to another, independently of which edition of Avast each system is using.

Is there any reason not to update each system independently? The database update is about 10 to 400 KB each time.

Thanks, for the replies.

yes, we are in iran, with download speed of maximum 5 Kb/s and a more expensive price for this speed than higher speeds in other contries.

and for a example if a system is fully updated and another system is not even for example 7 days, it is more comfortable to perform a offline update.

You are welcome.

No, not even the definitions folder has to be the same for all systems - it differs for 32bit and 64bit OSes.
And, the Setup folder is used for many things, including (some) program configurations, virus definition updates, …

The definitions are the same, i.e., paid and free versions use the same definitions.
But you can’t copy one folder over the other.

To analyze your system, please, upload (attach) the avast log:
C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\Setup.log
or C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log

If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.
