When you update your virus definitions, are the old ones deleted?
After a while.
Not immediately the virus definitions are incremental, so a new defs folder is created and the old defs and new are combined into the new folder. Generally you will have the current/new defs folder and the previous one.
Avast periodically does housekeeping dropping of the oldest defs folder.
