I’m running Avast Home Edition and I am having some problems with the on-access scanner. It is causing my computer to crash. This is happening about 90% of the time when I try to read from a certain DVD-R disc. The other 10% of the time the computer just can’t read from the DVD but there is no system crash. I have also had similar system crashes at 4 occasions without this DVD in the drive. There is never any error-message, the computer just freezes for a second and then reboots.
If I stop the on-access scanner I am able to access this DVD disc without problems. Actually it’s enough to stop the on-access scanner once and turn it right back on and after that it works fine. I run Windows XP SP 2 and I have Zonealarm free firewall. I have scanned the DVD for viruses but none is found. I have also tried updating Avast but it’s still the same. Disabling Zonealarm also doesn’t help.
Any ideas what’s causing this and what I can do about it? Any suggestions is appreciated.
The best advice for you, in my opinion, is to copy the error number on the blue death screen. Then Google parts of it to see if any related problem is on the Internet. If you want, you can post the error message (numbers, etc.) here in forums too.
Are you using Windows XP?
If so, please, go to folder \windows\minidump and send the newest (recent) .mdmp files for analysis.
Better if you can compress (zip) them and add some information about the BSOD and the link for this thread.
I’m not getting any error messages and no BSOD. Just a quick (1 sec) freeze and then it just restarts. I have tried booting Windows with the “Disable automatic restart” option but the computer still restarts when the error occurs. I do not have any minidump-folder in the windows-folder. There are no .mdmp files at all on the computer.
There is no problem with the computer until I try to read from this DVD that I have. However, if I close on-access and turn it on even this DVD works fine. It also works if I open the on-access scanner window before attempting to read from the DVD. The problem only occurs when on-access scanner is working in the background after being automaticly started by windows.
Anyway, this is what the errorlogs from Avast looks like.
