Ongoing problem with Avast Free updating

I am running Avast Free on a Dell Studio XPS 1640 laptop, Core2Duo 2.4GHz, 8 gigs ram, Win 7 x64. Avast shows current version as 2014.9.0.2008.

For some time now, I am shown a message a couple of times a week by Avast that virus definitions failed to update automatically, and I’m given the option to manually update. When I do so, Avast begins downloading the file(s), but what happens each time is that the same file(s) are downloaded over and over again -it gets to 100% of a file downloaded, and starts over. If there is more than one file, this happens with each file. The most recent attempt, just now, was with the file vps_32-c02.vpx.

After some time -today it was just over eighteen minutes- the Avast window showed:

Last encountered error: invalid file signature. Setup will terminate.
Engine and definitions: Already up to date (current version 131203-1)
Total time: 18:18
Download time: 17:30
Downloaded files: 23 (345,280.23 KB)
Server: Download w8209218 Avast 9 Server
http://w8209218.u.avast.com/ivps9x

When I hover my mouse over the avast icon in the system tray I am told “Everything is good,” and it shows the virus definitions version and program version I’ve listed in this e-mail.

So, seemingly it is updating, but then I completely don’t understand 1) why I keep getting a message that the automatic virus update wasn’t successful; and 2) why the downloads keep repeating themselves and finally report that setup will terminate.

Would appreciate any help as far as if there’s a program or system setting I need to change that would eliminate this behavior.

As noted several times…there is nothing wrong with your avast!
v2014 is on a different vps update cycle than previous versions.
You should still be receiving continuous streaming updates.

Right click on the “avast” desktop icon>click “open file location”>scroll to near the top and double click on “defs”> you will find all of your vps updates 8)

edit: Try…Control Panel>Uninstall a Program>double click “avast”>click “repair”>reboot
