What online virus scan tools do you advise for a second opinion?
is there any conflicts with using them alongside avast home edition and does it send files from your computer?

The one I wouldn’t recommend would be Panda because it downloads cr*p to your systems folder and the signatures aren’t encrypted, so avast detects these signatures.

I would also advise the standard shield is paused just before you start the scan (to avoid possible conflict and duplicate scanning) and don’t forget to enable it on completion.
Full computer on-line scanning:
Kaspersky (very good detection rates)
ESET NOD32
Trendmicro housecall
AVGas (does not necessary if you have AVG antispyware installed)
F-Secure
BitDefender (free removal of the malware)
HitmanPro (multiply scanners)
There isn’t a conflict with avast and it does not ‘send’ the files, that are scanned locally in your own computer.
A conflict can occur if the on-line scanner unpacks files to scan them, avast will scan them as they are created (unpacked files), if there happens to be an infected file in the archive that both recognise then there could be a conflict as they both fight for control.
